Heater produces oil/gas smell

Howdy everyone - when I turn on the heater in my 2002 C230 Sportcoupe, sometimes I smell oil or gas - not all the time, but maybe every other time. Any idea what might be causing this?

Cam magnet recall not for the M111 in the 02 C230, nor will it cause this symptom.

Any time you smell fuel, it is time to stop and have a complete look at the fuel system.

It can be vey dangerous if you have a leak.

It could turn your ride into a carbecue.

You may also want to check out your valve cover gasket. They can leak and drip a bit of oil on the exhaust manifold where it burns off, and you can get a whiff of burnt oil in the cab via the HVAC system.

Pretty common issue on both the V6 and Inline 4 motors. My right side VC gasket is just starting to leak a bit at 80K miles.

You really need to determine if it is gas or oil smell, because, as Moviela notes, fuel leaks can be dangerous.

Good luck on it !

In other words, when you turn on the heater, you're pumping in air that comes in directly under the hood.
So, whatever is stinking under the hood, is going to stink up your car.
So, that includes any oil that's burning or exhaust leak.

For me, I had to replace the manifold gasket a couple times due to exhaust leaks.
Sitting at lights I'd choke. Moving, there was enough air circulation, you wouldn't notice it.

Be sure to use the mercedes one, not one from the local auto parts store.
I have a couple of extra ones, I could sell you one very inexpensively if that's the issue.

But before you replace anything just look for leaks, and whats smelling and from where..
Tighten any loose nuts and bolts and see if that fixes it.
