Crap!! P0340 PO341 Help?

Just when it seemed like I might be able to go 5K miles without some bit of drama....car stalls out, and then I had to nurse it home, P0340 PO341.
Well, I'm doin' my due diligence here, but if anyone wants to chime in, feel free while I'm researching.

Not finding any good info....anyone?
I have a spare CPS but this is apparently something else?

So here's whay happened, I went to accelerate the engine tapers off, the CEL comes on the dash, and then it stalls.
Oh...no...
So I restart, but it doesn't want to run at full power, so I nurse it home.
I tried revving it, which it did, but it sputters a bit, and it seemed like the dash was flickering a bit too?

Guess I'll check all my electrical connections in the AM.

I'm reading it could be the timing chain as well, but it seems like it starts out ok, and then acts up, so
don't think it's jumped a tooth or anything.

So here's the breakdown of the codes.
P0341 - B6/5 (Right intake camshaft Hall sensor) : The alternation frequency of the signal value is implausible.
P0341 - B6/5 (Right intake camshaft Hall sensor) : The time of the signal value change is implausible.

Is this Right intake camshaft Hall sensor ? (#68)

Is that the camshaft position sensor?
There's 2 sensors on the head, one on too of the valve cover and the one I show in the picture.
What's the function of these 2 sensors?

68 is the camshaft actuator magnet.

P0340 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0341 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Its the one on the cam cover messing around according to codes.

The one on the cam cover reads the cam position. The one on the front of the engine corrects the cam position.

Dude, that was so obvious!

Good luck with the repair, and post what the eventual fix was.

Uh...so which one should I replace?
You're saying the one top of the valve cover reads the cam position?
Cam cover= Valve cover?
I just went out and started it, it fires right up.
I waited a minute for it to warm up, then revved it a little, still ok, revving in low revs. Then rev'd it all the way up, I think 4K is the max in Neutral.
It kinda went wonky, not going back to idle right away, then just just plop.
It shut off. So it runs...a little.

Suggestions?

I can't find that other sensor on the EPC.
Damn.

And I do see I have some oil on the front of the sensor on the front of the engine, though I have the sacrificial dongle. Maybe cleaning the sensor and the dongle would be worth a try.

Could it be related to the cam chain? I was womdering if should adjust the chain tensioner, I'm at 188.5K miles, over 300K Kilometers.

You should replace the sensor on the cam cover as a start. Cam cover = Valve cover.

Leave the chain alone for now unless it's noisy. You are not getting a code that the cam timing is advanced/retarded.

The trouble on this forum is that many talk of the device on the front of the motor of which the M111 has 1 and the M271 has 2 as sensors. They are not sensors. They are solenoids/actuators that drive the cam adjusters on the front of the camshaft.

Thanks Glyn, Well I just found this pic and I'll go ahead and post it for prostraterity. he he
So, the sensor we are discussing is the one in the round red circle.
Ignore the arrows in the pic pointing to the manifold. Now if I could just find a part number.

The P/N shown in my EPC is A 004 153 00 28

EDIT ~ Sorry, our posts crossed. Yes the cps shown in the circle. cps in this case = camshaft position sensor.

That part # isn't coming up for 2002, under my VIN on EPC
Parts.com shows it MY 2000 and before.

The thing in my red circle is the thing we're looking for correct?

I'm not finding it....the pn you show isn't valid for my car.
Bugger is elusive! Not seeing it on EPC anywhere!

Why not just go to a dealer's parts dept., and have them veify the part # for you.

Glyn? Are saying I need a crankshaft position sensor?
Never minds....it seems I posted this some time back...ha.
Looking up the VIN yields nothing. You have look at the data card, get the engine type,
which in my case is 111.981, then electrical and then category 075, which doesn't show up
when searching by VIN. And I thought i knew EPC.

PN -A0041531328
Looks to be about $150.

I answered my question long ago...when I ordered a CRANK position sensor that has never been used.
Maybe I'll do them both at once to be sure.
https://mbworld.org/forums/3222371-post241.html

I saw on a youtube video, where part of the diagnoses involved using an oscope to see
if a square wave was coming off the sensor.
Well mine is saturated with oil, I'll start with that.
Also, dammit if i could get my CS7.4 working (my old XP laptop died)
I could check to see if I get a reading maybe?

Some are open. I think Fremont is open. At least 20 miles in each direction.
Ha, I was scanning the pick and pull's to see if any 2002's were there. No luck.
Just a 1996, not the same. Hey if we keep these cars just a few more years, we'll be able to scavange parts for almost nothing.
Pick and pull any engine is like $200. Trannies are like $50.

EDIT: Just called all local dealers, no one has it stock, they have to order it and it's $250.
I think I'll just order it myself,, too bad Autohauz is closed, damn.

Sorry - I did not have the 981.

Confirm P/N A 004 153 13 28

I'll bet either would work but get A 004 153 13 28

Well, thanks to the forums, etc. to be able to determine the origin of the problem.
Turned out the connector was just about falling out of the sensor.
Doesn't seem to be anything holding it in.

There's a place on the top where you can see an indent where the sensor would clip but there's nothing for the indent to clip to.
I've never pulled this off before, so I guess the heat just caused the clips to break off over time. A little duct tape solved the problem.

Thanks for your help Glyn!

Out of curiosity what is the main purpose of the connection that you were having an issue with?

Glyn,
Well, I hadn't checked it yet, since initially I didn't know where to look.
Once I determined which sensor was the offending item, with your help,
and I checked around for a few prices, I went outside, and cleaned the connection
and discovered that the connector was barely making contact.

edgar, the connector in question is the one in the circle on the picture.
I wonder if it was supposed to have a metal clip of some sort?
Need to give it another look.

Nope, just looked at the photo I posted and I definitely am missing the plastic clips, they broke off, I guess just from heat over time. You can see on top where it clips to the sensor.

Did the oil in the connector cause any problems? I too have that but don't know whether it's an issue or not...

I didn't see any oil in that connector per se. It was just that the clips have fallen off, and the connector was falling out. I'll need to keep an eye on it, since no matter what tape I use, it will degrade and require periodic replacement.
