Took My First Road Trip In My Coupe!

I've had my coupe now for 2 months and its been good aside from the climate control flap issues and CD changer issues. So, my wife and I decided it needed to go on a road trip to Myrtle Beach from the Cleveland, OH area

Just rolled into the city

I know the MPG gauge is not perfect but I've found it to be about a 1/2 mpg off when I check at fill ups

Hotel Check-In

Spent some time here. Beautiful weather upper 80's everyday!

Found it completely necessary to park under a palm tree

...and one of the gauge cluster from the ride home. More uphill driving then the way down = less MPG but still respectable

1500 mile round trip until its belt. I have to say this car was fantastic on the freeway at 70-75 mph.

Just thought I'd share

C230K - sold
And I thought I was whacked as we text'd ETA and mileage updates from this past Labor Day W/E trip from Syracuse 3.5 Hours, 234 miles, RT81 South off exit, & about 2 more hours -79 miles of rural scenic back way thru Mannheim, Lancaster, into MD over Conowingo Dam to Havre DeGrace.

My MPG in this 2002, C230K @ 83,000 mile, 6 speed with A/C on both ways floored me. The 1st photo shows at speed on highway, proving if you slow down your mileage increases, hmmm who'd guess (photo #2).

The better mileage was the same return trip as the traffic and very dense fog in PA slowed us to the speed limit (photo 3).

I've actually gotten better mileage than that, but the mountain driving killed it. It was around 33 until I got into WV and all the mountains.

Yes, the suspension is stock as far as I know. The rear springs were replaced by the previous owner because one of them broke and you have to replace in pairs. He actually drove the car in our horrible winters and I believe he put weight in the back for traction.

I should have multi quoted but anyway...

Slower is always better. Lower RPMs and constant speed will always boost MPG. The starting/stopping and idling is what kills MPG. When I drive to work in the morning I hit a bunch of traffic lights and there is a stretch where I can barely squeak by with 6th gear but I can get an average of 28

I don't know if any of you guys saw this:

u could actually, when my coupe was only 25,000 miles (5 years old) i could easily get 32-34 MPG, but until i lower my car and aligment keep getting F up and now i even have coilover more awkward angle rubber contacting the ground so u lose MPG,

Don't know about 1.8L coupes but the 2002 2.3L i had had no problems getting mileage that high. i got 32MPG once driving through suburbs on Sunday evening on 15 mile drive.

I drive a lot of random cars (weekly rentals for work commuting), and nothign compares to our coupes for long distance drives.
Almost like our coupes were designed to be the perfect long distance cruiser. Ive done over 1500km in a single stretch driving by myself. Never can do that with any other car.
Get on the Hwy, get to an appropriate speed, switch on cruise, turn on the seat heater and some bob marley and chill! LOL.
I also get 30+mpg consistently during highway driving.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
I guess all my tweaking, I never see that.
If I baby it, I might see 25 mpg, maybe on a long enough trip on the highway, 28, but as soon as I hit the stop and go, it's back to 22.
I think at this point, I'd be willing to take a performance hit to get mileage like that.\
Once or twice ever I got 30 mpg.
ASP Pulley anyone? ha.

Maybe I should change the title of this thread to an mpg thread. Lol. It is interesting to see other experiences though.

The asp pulley should have nothing to do with mpg unless you're getting into the gas pretty good.

Do you have a boost gauge in your car? As long as the engine is pulling vacuum you should see no difference with a pulley change versus the stock pulley.

Also with the previous post with mpgs listed who's cars are manual and who's are autos?

Just curious, why did you ask about the suspension earlier? Does it look lower than stock or higher? I have no idea about the options, I don't know if it has the sports package or not. I see so many different variations of these cars when it comes to options

I was just wondering because when I bought my coupe it already had coils on from the previous owner, so I was wondering what stock height on the coupes looked like. It looks pretty good IMO

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
I enjoy the trip reports. Thanks for yours. A long drive in a German car is pure pleasure for me. For me though I think a wagon is just perfect for a spin to Phoenix or a 24 hour grind to SAT(San Antonio, Texas.) The wagon has more room in the back for her stuff.

Thanks! I think so too. When I had my Jetta, I had it lowered on budget coils and hated the ride. This car will probably be staying at stock height which I'm ok with.

I think I'm going to look for an MB wagon 4matic when it comes time to replace our minivan for the trips with the kids. The kids love my coupe but it would be impossible to take a trip with the 4 of us with the tiny hatch. We were cutting it close with just 2 of us.

The car is blue BTW. I get that a lot. When I was looking at the car on craigslist my wife thought it was blue and when I test drove the car, I stopped by my parents house to show my dad the car and he thought it was black also.

The next long trip won't be until next September. We take 2 trips a year to Myrtle Beach. Once in June with the kids and once in September without the kids
