Sunroof Broken in 27* weather

Hello everyone,

Listen to what happend to me last night, I was doing some Christmas shopping and on my way home i cracked the sunroof and lit a cig' What i do always to get the smoke out well when i decided t close the sunroof it wouldnt shut so i pulled over and toggled with the switches a bit and instead of it shutting it opened fully!!! And im in Baltimore Md and it was 27* couldnt get it shut for all the money in the world so i had to drive 45 mins with the sunroof open and the heat blasted until i parked it in my garage, Went to my local Mb today and they told me i need a new motor and switch 1-2 weeks and they cant get to it until after new years!! I was like WTF???? Im down here vacationing and i ship my car back to Fl and im not going to put it on a carrier without the sunroof closed..So they manualy closed it with this crank and now im drinking my car like a little hodd rat until i get back to Palm beach...I called a few other dealers and they had the same turn around time about 3 weeks. I cant figure MB out , When the new C comes out im trading my car on a cls!!! Aint nothing but a Chrysler anywayz lol lol ..Hope everyone has a happy holiday and a great new year......Guss

The question is: Why can't you crank it close with the wrench yourself?

I thought MB's electrics are so unrealiable to the point that it's mandatory for your sales guy teach you how to close it in case the sunroof stops working.

the sunroof getting stuck happened to my dad back in 85...... he had to whip out the manual and figured out that he could close it using the tool. They know their electrical isn't perfect so they put these safeties in for years now....

help with sunroof please (not panoramic)

I'm a proud new owner of an '03 C230k sedan, but noticed something quirky about the sunroof. I'm not sure if it's broken, or just needs to be reset/aligned, or ??? It's the standard sunroof, not the panoramic one.

When I try to close the sunroof by pushing the sunroof button forward past the detent (i.e. auto-close all the way), the sunroof will only close partially, and then open all the way again. This happens with the roof in any partially openned/closed position.

To get it to close all the way, I have to hold the button forward.

I read the manual and can't find anything about this. Does it sound broken, or is there something else going on that I am unaware of? Thanks in advance!

Mine was having this problem for a while. I tried resetting it as stated in the manual, but that didn't produce positive results. The dealer reset it the next time I had it in for service. It still has this problem occasionally, but not often. Try the method in the manual, then hit the dealer if you're still having issues (assuming you still have warranty).

My driver's window was doing the same thing. The dealer can reset this easily.

The nearest dealer is 2+ hours away. Can anyone tell me how I'm supposed to reset the sunroof, and maybe windows too (just in case). Thanks!

Try using the search function with the word SYNC.

Check your owner's manual. It's listed with the sunroof operation instructions. It's on page 192.

1. Turn key to position 1 or 2
2. Press switch in the "raise" direction until rof is fully raised at rear. Hold switch for approximately one second.

Good luck!

Thanks, ffejalink. I checked my manual again and sure enough - there it is. Went and did just that and all is good now! Gotta love it when it's something simple.

Sunroof problem - NOT fixed?????

Well, I reset the sunroof as per the manual and it worked for a couple times, but back to no auto-close. Everything else seems OK - it just closes partially then opens all the way again unless you hold the button forward. Any suggestions?

I merged the threads since they are dealing with the same problem. Lets keep it simple and not start another one for the same issue.

mines been doing it for over a year now... haha.... i reset it and it didn't do sh*t. I just hold down the button instead of using one touch...... telling the dealer about stuff like that is only asking for more issues. They will dig around, screw things up more and give me a car with serious electrical problems. This moonroof problem is the only issue I have had with this car to date so I think I can live with it.... can you ?

Amdeutsch - no problem on merging the threads. I didn't really want to start another one, but I wanted to change the title of this one to 'still NOT fixed' and couldn't find a way to do so. If you could change the title so people know we're working on this I think it would be helpful (to someone with sunroof problems, anyway).

eletromethod and others: I have a freind with the genuine factory workshop software (or so he claims) installed on his computer. It looks real to me (has all MB models thru 2003/4), and when I looked up the sunroof I found notes about having to replace the overhead controller module because of a software error(!!!!) by the manufacturer (Hella) which will cause erratic operation (problems with the auto functions, etc.). It looks like there is a dedicated microcontroller in the overhead module. I will investigate further and post here.

For those who are interested, it looks like the sensors in the car and the microcontrollers are using multiple CAN buses for communication.

You are correct. There are 2 versions. The sedans get the simple one whereas the Coupe gets the dual version called panoramic which allows independent opening of the front or the rear section. Obiviously, as you already know, you can't open both at the same time in the Coupe.

i had the same exact problem with mine. for some reason it would only happen during cold nights. i'd push the one button close it would go half-way then open back up. i took it to the dealer and they said that the lining or whatever it is wasn't lubed properly. supposedly with the santa ana winds a lot of dust and dirt gets in the lining and causes it to open back up. they just relubed it and cleaned it out. works fine now. but then again who knows it hasn't been cold in san diego in a while.

Sunroof Adjustment?

I can't believe I just now noticed it but my sunroof when closed does not lie exactly flush with the roofline. The front edge is maybe an 1/8 inch high and the back edge 1/8 inch low.
Does anyone know if there is an adjustment that can be made to "flatten" it out?
Thanks in advance for the help.

i kno in the front of mine, there is a spot on the driver side corner, where you can see the sun getting through... <-- thats dealing with the sunroof cover, not the sunroof itself...

Question Sunroof not opening/closing properly

I have a 2001 C320 with 71,000 miles on it. I'm having some issues with my sunroof. First it isn't opening all the way. I've looked and I don't see anything blocking its path. I've also put grease on the slides but that didn't help either. I believe this is leading to my next problem. When I use the one touch close the glass slides forward, hits the front, the moonroof pops up then back down and then the sunroof opens up about 2 inches.

I took it to my dealership for a quick look and they said they've never seen this before. They thought it was possibly the sunroof motor but they wanted $225 for the motor and $105 per hour to change that with no guarentee it would work. I ended up buying a used motor from Potomac German Auto, www.pgauto.com, and tried putting that in. It took about 20 minutes to swap out but that didn't seem to fix anything. I've tried to resynch the sunroof but that didn't work either.

Any more suggestions? I have an appointment to take it to the dealership in 2 days. I really don't want to spend the money for them to tell me what the problem is.

Thanks!
