A way to get rid of the crayon smell in your car
So from my research, it seems there's material in the trunk above the rear shock mounts that is the primary cause of the notorious crayon smell. You can access it by bending back the carpet on the sides of the trunk. The material consists of tar and cotton fiber, tears easily and weights approximately 1.5 lbs. on each side.
Now why am I sharing this mind-blowing information with you? Because you are going to do it first and report back the results to confirm said theory.

Crayon smell
I found the crayon smell in my 2005 clk 320. It's the foam pad underneath the carpets. The are large molded foam pads attached to the carpet backing and the foam fits into indentations in the floor

hparth, or anyone else, did your fix get rid of the smell in the long run? This smell is really bad in my car. Definitely very strong from the carpets. I also smell it in the trunk as well, but I don't sit in the trunk, so I'm less concerned about the trunk.

Crayon smell
Scottonfire. I will pull the carpet back I. The trunk, remove that material and let you know. The weird thing is, I ordered new drivers side carpet from MERCEDES and wheni took it out of the plastic bag it came in, the molded foam on the back of the new carpet smelled the exact same way

Hey guys. New member, hate to resurrect an old thread, but just wondering whether removing the sound deadening material from the boot fixes this issue? And if so, is there more of this material throughout the car? Or is it the foam underneath the carpet that and hence very difficult to remove the smell? I never really thought much of the smell, and it was only after I was in a mate's e46 recently and smelled the exact same smell, that I wondered exactly what was in german cars of that era that might create such a smell. A quick internet search revealed it is a well known issue, with questionable health impacts. A quick look on e46 fanatics, and it seems that they have excellent results eradicating the smell when removing the sound deadening material from the wheel arches in the boot, under the rear seat and in the parcel shelf (last one sounds like a real pain). So just wondering if anyone has had similar success removing such material in an mb, or whether it is an endemic problem without a feasible solution? All opinions welcome.

OK, so there are many threads on this site (and other sites as well) about this issue yet no clear explanation as to the source of the odour and how to remove it. Surely someone has explored this issue and found that there is/isn't a viable solution? As I have said, those on E46 fanatics have more-or-less solved this very issue in their cars.
Here are the other threads on this website about this issue:

Let's consolidate these threads and put the issue to rest once-and-for-all.

Car has been in the garage for a while now as I had changed jobs and received a company car since the last post. Charged-up the battery and took it for a run, and the smell was the first thing to hit me opening the door. With more exploration, I found more of insulation material in the passenger footwell and transmission tunnel, and as such it will likely be in the driver's footwell as well. This looks like a real PITA to remove, and it's got me wondering whether anyone has successfully eliminated the odour (and whether they needed to remove this material as well, and whether it is actually worth it. Otherwise might have to let the old girl go, which I really don't want to do.
Cheers lads

Resurrecting an extremely old thread here. Wondering if anyone has ever made more progress on the removing the smell?
I have a 2006 C350 Manual and the car has basically sat for the last year as the smell drives me crazy. It's a spare car to the spare car and thus sits for long periods. When I had driven it more regularly it wasn't as bad.
Needless to say I'm now considering what options I have other than selling the car.
Given the content of this thread, if I were to get the entire interior reupholstered and asked them to remove everything, the carpets the sound deadening, the rear bulkhead material, the trunk liner, etc, it seems as though I would be free of the lurid crayon smell?
The car is sitting on new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's, new brakes/rotors/pads, new plugs and coils, fresh service, etc and is otherwise totally mint. Feels crazy to throw so much money into the interior but I've reached that point.
Cheers.

Baking soda can be used to remove odors from almost anything..
. Just sprinkle some in the offending area (on the carpet, in your shoes) and let it sit or put some on a plate and let it sit. It just sucks the odor right out of there..
Let me know if it works!

My 2009 CLK still smells like it, but it's getting better over the years. I leave it in the garage with the windows down and it's not a problem any more. Not a perfect solution, but...
