Change out transmission fluid after 80K miles?

I can't find the thread, but I remember reading that although mercedes says it's good for life, go ahead and change it out BUT after 80K miles, just leave it b/c when you change the transmission fluid after this mileage something, something, bad. Can't remember. Thoughts about doing a transmission fluid change at 95K miles?

I did all my transmission and differential oil at 100k and was fine. Just be sure to use the correct fluid for the transmission fluid and differential oil. If you're going to do it yourself first be sure you can loosen the fill plug before draining. There's been a few that had a hard time removing the fill plug after they already drained the fluid.

Absolutely. Do the full flush.

I have read that doing it many miles and years down the line can cause more harm than good because it may loosen up stuff that might have been stuck in there. I'm personally about to do it myself and my cars at 104K miles.

Great. You can be the guinea pig! Let us know.

From reading other threads, I think the best course is NOT to do a full flush but instead a 'drain and fill' since it won't be a total shock to the system, only 6 quarts replaced as opposed to 9 or 10 I think.

I would do a back to back drain and fill if your worried about a flush. Just do a drain and fill run car a few thousand miles then do it again. I did a full flush on my car around 180k but my fluid had been changed two two or three times before then.

I didn't mean a full fluid change, I meant the half (or so) of the fluid the dealership does when servicing the trans!

I haven't heard about any disobedient transmissions after doing a drain and fill after 80k miles. My car is at 78k miles (125k km's), and I changed the fluid and filter at 75k miles. Since then I also sucked out 5L from the system and filled 5L. No problems. Shifts better than ever now.

If you have the suction pump which many members here use for oil changes, you could also use that to suck out some transmission fluid some time after a drain and fill from the pan. Very safe to do so. Just check the level using the MB dip stick, otherwise your tranny will slip for days.

Changing the fluid & filter will always be the best thing you can possibly do.

If you work cleanly, failures after a change or flush is an urban myth that has gained legs. If a transmission fails after a fluid change it would have failed anyway.

Change fluid & filter every 39K miles or 60K Km's.

I did a fluid flush and filter change on my C240 with 134000 miles. the transmission acts smoother and more crisp with the shifting.

I am with Glyn on this when he says changing your fluid and filter is 100% good and should be done no matter the age. Here in the US we do have a contingent of people who would not change the fluid on a car with high miles. There are stories of transmissions slipping and not shifting right, but those are never first hand accounts.

Bottom line is I have changed tranny fluid in several cars (10) with high miles (over 100K) and no history with zero issues. In fact almost every time the shifting becomes better.

So you changed your transmission fluid well below the mileage we're talking about and it worked? wow, man. That's really helpful to know. Can you fill us in on any other services you did before the scheduled maintenance period and if it runs fine?

good info. Didn't know there was a filter too for this job. Found a decent DIY video too!

Note that the electrohydraulic bush seals/O rings only apply to the 722.6 5 speed transmission. TCU is built into the 722.9 7 speed.
