P0117 code after reconnecting battery-2004 C320 4Matic Sedan

Hi all, I had to replace the alternator which meant I (reluctantly) had to disconnect the battery. After reconnecting the battery I had a check engine light. Connected the code scanner and had the P0117 code which is "engine coolant temperature low". It also seems like the electric engine fan is running abnormally. I tried to cancel the code with the scanner and it won't cancel.
At one point, before the new alternator, the voltage at the battery was down to 9.5V while the engine was running. After the new alternator it read 14.5-13.5V at the battery when the engine was running.
Any ideas? I didn't have this problem before. Could it be that since the voltage went down so low that it affected the coolant temp sensor somehow?
Thanks,
Joe

Sounds like you might have a stuck open thermostat independent of the alternator.
