Key fob issue

Hello everyone, Im a new member and glad to be hear. First time ever owning a benz. Im sorry if this new thread seems out of order, I searched all over the forum and I couldnt find anything. I might have a unique situation so I hope I dont **** any moderators off for this post.

I just bought a used, really great shape 05 C240 4matic. 1 of my key fobs works perfect. The other one the buttons on it dont work at all. But it can start the engine. I changed out the batteries and still same crap. The light doesnt even come on on the remote when I press any of the buttons. I opened up the key fob, took it apart and I dont see any corosion or anything. It looks fine.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem before, can anyone help me out?

The car will start because if I remember correctly the EIS powers the key once it's put into the ignition. If it's recognized, car will start just fine. I am going to go on a whim and say the key fob itself is done for. One too many drops or mishandling from previous owner (ex. dropped in water)

Only reason I say that is because if the one key works fine, then it's not the cars receiver.

Hey thanks so much for the help! you make perfect sense. Do you or anyone else know where I can get a new key fob? Is there any parts suppliers affiliated with MBWorld?

thanks!

I would go directly through MB for that. I seen it's a hit or miss when you get the key from, say, eBay. Some MB dealers have had no success programming them to the car. It's not a cheap process, so if you can make due with the one key, might be the better option to save a few bucks!

If you do buy a key, shop around to several local dealers. Prices vary wildly.
Also, ask them what the key will look like, if you care. They keep screwing around with the styling of the keys.

Ok, so I have the same problem. Actually, I only have one key and want another. Can a used key fob be reprogrammed to work on another car? Found a guy selling used ones on kijiji, but Mercedes says the keys cannot be recoded at all! On that note, what's the success rate of programming the ones you find on ebay?

Dealer says a new key for them is roughly $400 all in! Canadian that is.

Thanks!!

Expensive is putting it mildly! I believe most if not all of the Ontario, Canada stores are corporate owned? Hence, when I called three different dealers, they all sang the same song. Apparently, Mercedes changed their policy recently and will NOT reprogram used keys. That's what I'm told by a locksmith anyway. Highway robbery I tell you.

AFAIK with the ebay ones you will have to desolder the eeprom chip from your old key and solder it into the new one.

VVF is correct....the only way a used key will work is if you get a similar key and resolder some components between the 2 keys. I had the old black one and star in developer mode and wanted to try code a newer chrome key anyhow even after reading everywhere it can't be done and is confirmed another key would not code to my car. :P
