How to update factory navigation?

Starting with a 2005 W203 with factory navigation and the original 2005 DVD's that come with it...

... how do I update the navigation system to use the new 2014+ DVD's?

Do I just buy a 2014 DVD and insert it into the nav system?

Or does it need to be taught to use the newer maps, or something...?

Thanks!

Depends on your head unit. Some older ones require a nav service disc in order to skip several years of map updates. That being said, some folks have gone from 2005 ish all the way to 2014 with no problems. Here is a pic of the nav service disc, if you head unit is listed then you might need it. It's about $15 from the dealer.
Alternatively, you could just take your car and the 2014 nav dvd (if you have it already) to the dealer, play ignorant and have them do it...that way if they brick it they have to fix it...
Also, stay away from copied discs...they make your nav module work harder and run hotter, and directions may lag ie it tells you to turn left/right after you have passed the intersection. Copied discs have a bluish tint while original ones are silver....look at your current disc for reference.
Hope this helps...

Thank you. That's very helpful, I appreciate it. Where do I find the part number for my head unit, as you describe?

Turn on your head unit, select SERV then SYSTEM.
press OK (on the joystick) then 7 then MUTE, hold all three buttons for a couple of seconds and you will see the service menu. The number at the top beginning with 203 is your head unit part number.
This menu can be called up from other screens too, but I prefer the system page. When you press the OK button make sure the joystick doesn't wiggle sideways or it won't work.
I don't know about 2014 maps, but I went from 2006 to 2011 with no issues.
