Replacement Key Not Working

When I purchased my vehicle, it only came with 1 transponder. I ordered a replacement from my main Merc dealer last week as I wanted a spare.

When I picked it up today, the actually key opened the car however the fob did not work.

The chap explained that some of the 8 'tracks' could have been disabled and will need to be unlocked via Merc or an independent.

Does this sound about right? Also my existing fob just has 2 buttons on it, however the one I've just had made has 3 and the IR looks like a straight line as opposed to the circular I have at the minute.

Can anybody confirm this?

Cheers

more than likely the key just needs programmed to the car--this is done with the Mercedes Star system; good sign is the remote works so should be one for your car

2002 C240
I ordered a replacement key about 4 months ago for my 2002 C240. Had to show them my vehicle registration/VIN, personal ID (drivers licence, etc.) and the car. Took the dealership about 3 days to get the new key. It was the new chrome style key. Same number of buttons (3) as the original keys. Every function of the new key worked with my car. No additional programming needed.
I talked to a few different dealerships before ordering, and some said there may be some additional programming at additional cost. I went with the dealer that said the key would be 100% functional from Mercedes. It was plug & play. The best part was they had the best price.

An update - they said the key had come into the shop without being programmed.

I have now got the key. it starts the car and opens via infra red however it will not lock/unlock via RF.

My original key works fine

Any suggestions?

If the original key works completely fine, then it's the replacement key that's the problem. Take both keys to the dealership and show them that the new one has issues. Then it's their problem. I don't know what else you can do. You certainly don't want to try to fix it yourself.

The replacement key should have ALL functions the original key(s) have.
What tommy said. Take the key back to the dealer and have them resolve the issue. Good luck.
