Oil In Spark Plug Recess

I changed the spark plugs on my 2004 C180 Kompressor Coupe today was surprised to find that all 4 spark plug recesses were full of engine oil.
I sucked this out with a syringe with a length of tubing before removing the plugs to prevent oil going into the cylinder.
Anyone seen this before, where did it come from and more importantly how do I cure it.
I don't know the time frame for this to happen as only recently bought the car and it is without service history, mileage 93,000.

Valve cover gasket, specifically the spark plug tube seals in the middle of the cover. Very normal, change the gasket out and the leak will stop.

Heat up the spark plug gaskets with a heat gun to get them to come off. The valve cover can be brittle so be careful.
