P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Got this error the other day.
Car wouldn't shift into reverse or park without 1st shutting off the engine.
Only from drive to N.
Crap!
Done a little reading and apparently it's related to the circuit board in the floor shifter.
The basic idea is, the shifter is telling it's in a different gear than what is possible Like it tells the ECU that it's in P but the car is obviously moving based on the sensors in the wheels.

So, looking up this pn for my car, yikes it's like $600 new on discount price!!!
Yesterday, a 2003 C230 popped up in a local pick n pull, so off I scurried to be there before everyone else. I looked it up in advance in the EPC based on the VIN of the junked car, and the pn for this part is different than mine.
In fact it's a 209 pn. Still I figured I'd get it so I could tear it apart and see how it works, without taking the chance of actually f'ing up the one in my car.
So I got the part, took it apart, I see how it works, there a circuit board that tells the ECU what gear it's in and it's using hall effect sensors, so no contacts to clean (thought that would be the fix...no)
Likely I've now ruined the replacement part as it has some adjustment as to the mounting of the sensor. But I did eyeball it pretty well.
Are these unit really any different one from the other?

I"m going to pull the one from my car and see how it compares to the one I have in my hand. The circuit board module is 209 pn but likely not sold seperately.
Definitely mine won't be a 209 pn, since the 209 version CLK didn't come out til 2003 I think. The shifter itself uses detents in a plastic pieces to set the positions
and what little grease that was there is pretty much gone, so I'm guessing that what happens as these things age is that the angles of the shifter changes a little from wear on the plastic detents and then throws the code.
Re-aliging the sensor might fix it, but it would be trial and error since no way to bench test it.

In the end, the one pulled from the 03 is NOT a 209 pn, but rather a 203
pn. Well, sheet the cars are basically the same anyway.

Cleared the code on my coupey and everything is working now, but not trusting it.
Arrrgh, trying to pass smog and all my smog test thingys were set....starting over.
Separate issue was getting grey codes on emissions, 1st too lean, then Carsoft read mercedes specific codes saying something about the MAF shorting to ground and now too rich. Plus when pushing the gas pedal went up then down very slowly and slight fluctuation in speed, lead me to believe that MAF needs replacement so i ordered one, a Bremi due to be here tomorrow.

Planning my next move.

Had the same symptoms and it was the shifter module unit. Bought a used one with 200k less kms on it for 100€ and 45mins DIY.

Is the code from STAR? I had a direct code refering to the shifter unit from STAR when I had those problems. If the circuit unit is on the shifter unit itself, then it is a pretty easy job to fix it.

No, not read with star.
But initially got some grey code related to the trans.
Then bam, got the P0705.
Looked it up on Carsoft, not as good as Star, but will translate
MB codes to english, giving more detail.
I checked the TCU and no oil thankfully.
Very happy about that, but then I replace those Orings every time I do the trans oil.

Guess I'll take a chance and drive it again, and see if it throws a code again.
If yes, I'll try using the one I got from the Junkyard.
I can't help but wonder if those plastic detents wear down and cause the error for being out of alignment with the sensor.

Everything one needs to know for P0705.
