Rain Sensor and Windshield replacement

Rain Sensor and Windshield replacement
I'm having my broken windshield replaced on Wednesday. I believe my rain sensor isn't working since my 2002 c240 has 3 setting on the leaver but the wipers run constantly on setting 1, basically making 1 and 2 the same with setting 3 being faster.
I haven't had the car long and didn't even know a rain sensor was an option until the windshield replacement people asked me if I had one.
So my Questions:
1) Can I assume I have a rain sensor because there are 3 settings?
2) If yes, do I have a bad rain sensor?
3) If so, can I replace the rain sensor sometime after the windshield replacement or should postpone the windshield install until I can source a new sensor?
TIA,
Bob

Yes you have SA Code 345 in the VIN therefore you do have a rain sensor.
I cant answer your other questions, however I can explain the system electronically for you to answer your own questions.
The system is simple----rain sensor--overhead control panel---front SAM wiper off relay kq and wiper stage ! and 2 relay kl(the two relays are side by side in the third row from the front, test for functionality.
If the rain sensor has failed then the intermittant wiper function defaults to a 5 sec wipe.
With this info you can interrogate the system to answer your questions!!

Thanks Plutoe, very helpful. Since it is runs at a constants wipe (not the 5 second interval) I'm guessing the sensor is ok. I found a pic of what the sensor looks like online and see that mine has some bubbling around it. Sounds like that has caused an issue for others, maybe that is the case for me as well.
I feel it is safe to have the windshield replaced tomorrow and reseal or replace and reseal the sensor after that, unless the installer does that. Guess I'll know more tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Bob

Turned out the new windshield came with new sensors attached. It was drizzling on the way to the office this morning and they worked perfectly. Very cool feature.

I have the rain sensors on my C230. It wasn't something that I thought I needed until I had it. Pretty soon I won't know how to live without it.
