blocking the crankshaft on my W203
Hi everybody,
I have an oil leak and I suspect the front crank seal. I saw there is a tool to block the crankshaft to undo the bolt (that can be very tight). I cannot find it here in Europe. Is there somebody who can help me with the correct link to this tool so I can purchase it online or give me the exact name/number? Other tips are also welcome of course ;-)!
It's a C200 Kompressor, 2001, station wagon, automat.
Thanks a lot for the help!
Frederik.

Hi ambit, thanks for the reply! So if I understand you correctly, you just took a piece of steel and put it true a hole of the pulley? Correct me if I'm wrong, just want to be sure before I start this job.

MBWorld Fanatic!
From underneath the vehicle, there are 2 holes with rectangular rubber plugs in the front of the transmission. I know this sounds crazy,
but jam the end of a 1/2" socket extension up inside (the front one I think)
and turn the crank at the same time with a socket wrench (is it 27mmor 24mm?) until it catches.
This was a trick devised by the W203 M111 ASP pulley users on the forum years ago,
and I've successfully used it many time to remove my pulley during the
1st 100K miles, as i had to remove it every time the car went in under warranty.
I also just recently used it and all went well.
As you turn at some point you'll hit a point where the extension will slide in a little and catch.
Use some duct tape to hold it in place, and then reverse the procedure on the
return journey to tighten to 210 ft lbs.
Be sure to soak the bolt on some oil before you reinstall and then let a drain for a few minutes.
I've done this at least 5 times, and no damage to the vehicle, now at 235K miles.
Once you get the bolt off, gently rock the pulley back and forth until it comes off...
patience. It may take some doing!
On the reinstall be care to make sure you line up the woodruff key or you will have BIG
problems. You'll feel it catch and you'll be able to get it part way on before tightening.
If you fail to line it up, you'll push it into the engine, which a few people did....back in the day.
The key will be facing straight up at 20 degrees...uh...forget before or after TDC.
