Rattles, Ticking, knocking, rattling DIY FIX

Ok I hate rattles, I don't like loud music, and sometimes I even turn off the radio and the rattles were driving me nuts
I think I managed to fix most of them so I would like to sare these with you.

Please note that sound travels a lot so rattling coming from the roof might be coming from the floor

1) Rattlin/Vibrating mirror : Annoying vibrating sound, stops when you touch or move the mirror, applied a .5 x .5 inch piece of paper here

2 ) Squeaky seats : Squeeks when moving, or turning/braking hard

Applied some adhesive velcro backing (the fuzzy side )where the blue spots are, you may want to apply some other places but it is defintly caused by the plastic rubbing against the vinyl

3 ) ticking sound from passenger seat: coming from passenger headrest, touch the metal rods and the sound will stop

fix: pull out headrest and gently pry the 2 metal rods outward ( holding each metal rod with both hands, don't pull them apart or you will break the headrest) slide back into place

4) Rattle coming from what sounds like speedometer: When going over rough roads or braking:

Use a plastic wedge to create a small gap between the dash vinyl and the top vent/speaker looking thing and put a small piece of cardboard or the small foam that comes with electronic and computer stuff, apply on both side, don't be afraid the vinyl is extremely resistant and will form back, don't use any metal or you may cut it, alternativly you can use a plastic card , don't use a credit card cuz you might break it ( learned the hard way )

5) Rattling from what sounds like the speedometer when driving over rough roads or braking: I had a hard time fixing this one, tried removing the speedometer, foold around with it, only to find out it was coming from the center console, press on the part in blue, if it fixes the problem, apply some cardboard or hard foam beteen the carpet and the vinyl to apply some pressure

6 ) Vibration from back when listening to music with a lot of bass:

Turn off bass! Edited for DiamondNoir2k5 : This is a JOKE

or, open the medical kit compartment ( pre-2003 ) located in the rear and line the bottom with velcro backing ( again, the fuzzy type ) and wrap your med kit inside a thin blanket or an old t-shirt

7 ) ticking sound from center console when braking/turning

Apply some thin cardboard at a few places where the wood trim and the vinyl meets, also around the radio and climate control unit

Hope it does, especially #5 was the most annoying for me, it wasn't loud, and other people in the car couldn't hear it ( the though I was crazy ) but when I fixed it, it was like... ALLLLLLLLELUJAAAAAAAHHHHHH felt like the car was 10x stronger!!

Turn off my bass? Slow down? Have little pieces of cardboard sticking out all over the interior my car? This advice sucks.

Ok.. then.. here it is:

Disclaimer : Do not use 20x20 inches cardboard pieces for these fixes, make sure that the pieces fit completly between trims so to remain invisible and unknown to other people beside you. The turn off the bass and slow down parts were jokes, please do not leave your bass down and do not drive under the speed limit.Failure to follow these might result in you having cardboard pieces sticking all over your *******g interior and face injuries from friends who think you drive too slow and have a ghey sound system

i have 7 and 8. the solution for 8 works, all you need is to have the blue dial open a little. I'll try your solutions for 7 and see how it holds up.

Try number 5 first, I'm sure it will fix your problem... try to push on it when driving and I'm sure the ticking/rattling will stop, doing number 7 will further ensure the rattling will stop...

#2 is the most annoying.

I was able to solve some of the squeaks by lubricating the springs/hinges of the seat, yet the majority of the squeaks come from the vinyl rubbing seat.

Glad I have charcoal seats, the velcro fix will be easy and blend in.

Thanks!

How about a plastic creaking noise that seems to eminate from the passenger side?

Around the headrest area ? Or maybe the backset/ rear door area. Sounds like vinyl against plastic noise. Also, a ticking noise from inside the driver's seatbelt housing. I know it's in there because It's next to my freaking ear !

Thanks

Do you hear the sound only when you have a passenger? if so the plastic migh be rubbing with the vinyl at the seat base... as for the seatbelt housing problem I think there was already a post about this, although I never experienced it, you might want to move the thing up or down, or pop out the plastic part and check for a loose screw.... Is your head resting on the headrest? that could be the cause, try moving your headrest forward or backward, up and down.. etc...

You'd be surprised how sounds travel inside your car, block your left ear and see if you can hear it from somewhere else....

Thumbs up I would vote for this thread as one of the top THREE useful ones!

Off-hand, I cannot think of a more useful thread.

Great work!

Thumbs up Great Post!

Most helpful one I've ever seen on this board (especially from a non-modder like myself). I've got about 1/2 of these issues.
Can't wait to try the fixes. I listen to mostly sports talk radio instead of blasting the stereo, so these rattles are driving me nuts.
