Lightbulb Anyone know how to get to ashtray lamp?

How do I access the bulb in the ashtray, mine went out and I don't want to bring it for service just for that and would like to do it myself.

Thanks

Mine went out as well. But MBenzNL aka Steve fixed it when he installed my command.

The whole ashtray was removed and right behind it is where that tiny bulb is located.

Good luck!

Search the forum for instructions on installing command or cd changer, and stop after you get the ashtray out. (Abbreviated version: Remove wood trim around shifter, release clips and remove ashtray).

The following links will help:

RJC, don't know what car you have but on the pre-2005 cars like mine with a stickshift, open the ashtray door, remove the ashtray insert, pull hard on the lip of the console piece and will lift up (not too much) and then pull it foward (it's fitted into a groove in the back) and out of the way. Then to remove the ashtray assembly, there's a tab you have to press in the front to release it and it comes out, no force required. When it's out, you will see the wire going to bulb towards the back of the ashtray, pull it out and replace. I'm not sure on the automatic if you have to remove the trim piece around the shifter and put it in a certain gear. As for 2005, I don't know, it's different and I wasn't able to pull up the console easily.

I have an 04 CLK 500 (automatic), I'd really love to do this myself, any other thoughts would be most welcome.

At the dealer.

They will put it in for you for free. The bulb is also under warranty and is also free.

Can't believe this...I just bought my car in for Service B and also indicate my ashtray light is out on my C32. My parents pickup the car for me today and the light was not fix. I checked the invoice from dealer and guess what it said..."23383 Checked with Other models the sam, No light in front ashtray. Cigarette lighter has light and work ok". What an idiot! It's @ WI Simonson!! What a SHAM!!! I know there is a light because I have a W203 C320 @ with ashtray light.

Anyone know the exact specifications for the ashtray bulb (Amps/Watts)? I have mine ripped out but want to make sure I get the right bulb.

Thanks.

Good time to swap over to the SMOKER DELETE...and add in a cool looking 12v covered plug....Steve can hook this part up...the cover swaps over.

It is plug and play...

As to the OP...nice image...here is a shot over Buffalo, NY...

Good luck all...I can try to grab my OEM ashtray and look into the bulb if I get a free moment...

I'm getting a few questions on the ashtray / smoker delete...

The picture is the Part Number...it is the INSERT, you will REUSE your outside trim!

The unit pictured is *identical* to the stock ashtray unit. All you have to do is remove the chrome ashtray and the plastic piece next to it (it just pops out). You just need the rubber mat and the "12V" cover ... but i'd rather keep the lighter in there as a 'cover' because it could come in handy in a pinch (not for smoking).

...is that what you meant by your last post?
