Same as title.
How tight do you tighten the oil filter on a C300.
I think I must have overtightened mine causing the gasket to shift and leak.

vic,
I didn't have any problems on my first oil change last year. I think I kept turning it with a rachet wrench till you could tell that it had gone as far as it was going to go.
I must not have tightened it enough this time. I'm off to get a torque wrench.
Thanks

whoaa.... I haven't change oil on my MB yet but I've always hand tighten the oil filter on every car I've ever changed oil... You can easily overtighten it and cracked the o-ring if you use a wrench...

I now have a corner of my garage painted with mobile1 by hand tightening plus 1/3 turn.
You might want to hold off on the hand tightening till I get this resolved.

......oops,
In another thread I asked the same question and someone suggested that I had the o ring in the wrong grove. I was certain their car was different until I looked at the instructions that came with the filter and sure enough, it goes in the second grove. I put it where intuitively it seems that it would go but that's wrong.
As for hand tightening, I don't know. I put the torque wrench on it to 25Nm and ran the engine for a while to see if it would leak. Didn't leak.
I'd like to thank vic and jog who joined in this discussion.

my wife wild, but she loves every minute of it.
Get a quality torque wrench and follow the specs. Vic suggested 25 Nm and that seems reasonable unless the shop manual suggests otherwise.

I did buy a torque wrench to use on filter tightening this afternoon.
But that wasn't the problem. I had put the big o ring on the top grove instead of the next one down like you're suppose to.

Good - you can never have too many tools, especially power tools!

I use Automotive Wolf to track things. It would not let me forget.

My filter cap had a dot of paint on it marking the top with the bottom, I hand tightened the filter cap til the paint mark once again met up, it was snug enough that I had zero doubt it would be a problem with leaking, so far so good.

Correct about the "dot", if you use that as a guide you can't go wrong. In any case, you get a sense right away that you've tightened enough, there is a natural stop in it.
There is a printed guide with the filter that shows you where to place the top O ring, its not at the top most positions, its one "level" down from there.
Did you drive very far, did you get much of an oil leak? That could really be a mess or could even cause an oil fire.
