on my C300 2010 4Matic Sport. This feint whining sound has been bugging me..took the car in today. Needs a new transmission - just in time before the warranty ran out!

The noise was so feint, barely noticeable. Constant regardless of speed. Drove with the service manager and he didn't notice it until I pointed it out....

It'll take them a few days to get it in and replace it. Meanwhile I have a nice new 2014 C300 loaner.

Moral of the story..before the warranty expires get it looked at.

Another transmission failure, only some not all. There has to be a common reason or everyone with a 2010 4Matic would be filing a lemon law sout.

That's why I'm not totally sold on the 7G Tronic transmission. My Dad and I test drove an 06 CLS 500 a few years ago and found the transmission to be jerky, too busy and when you needed it to kickdown it would either go down too many gears or not enough. Also, people talk a lot about needing a new transmission though usually the car in question has much higher kilometers or miles.

The 5G Tronic has it's issues with the conductor plate but at least that's a well documented issue and people can plan accordingly for it. Seems like the more durable transmissions.

funny thing - the loaner they gave me is the 2014 version of mine with only 2500 miles. Gear changes jerk, and there's a delay in kick down.

I have no problem with my tranny.. I hear this a lot though.
A few times I have heard that you have to drive it intentionally...
I don't know how much truth there is to it, but I drive my car hard.. Constantly, and when I want it to do something it does it. But I can see it overreacting if you want to be sporty every now and then but still like to cruise around most of the time... I don't know how much truth there is to this but I do know that I have had no trouble with my transmission and it was actually part of the reason I bought the car... Maybe I have just been lucky every gear shift since I bought it?

Either way I am glad you got your transmission replaced before the warrentee ran out, that would've been a disaster if you went over by a couple miles.

You're not the first person to complain about the transmissions on the 2014. Someone here has a 2014 with similar problems so I'm curious how many 2014 owners have a problem. Also, 2010 seems to be a problematic year. Now they're bringing in the 9 speed auto and they've yet to perfect the 7 speed.

Wait I have a wining sound whenever I drive at slow speeds I can hear it the most. It kind of sounds like a turbo....Does this mean that anything is wrong with my tranny? I have a 2011 c300 4matic with 22,000 miles.

funny thing..i've put 300 miles on the loaner and now it shifts smoothly..kickdown is not great but the drive overall is pretty good. I guess it "adapted" to my driving style..

That's what happens when things become too complicated. They develop weird quirks and sometimes sort themselves out or require a ton of money and time to rectify the problem. The ZF transmissions used in BMWs, Audis and now Hyundais seem better. I remember when I test drove a BMW 328i and 545i that the transmission was silky smooth and very responsive especially in DS mode. The 545i had almost 200,000kms on it and I could never feel the thing shift.

The 5 speed unit on my Benz shifts smooth but it's lazy to kickdown and has somewhat weird gearing but at least it's smooth.

Neither my 2010 nor the 2014 change gears so smoothly. it's obvious the gears are changing. In my Lexus IS200 which is 10 years old you cannot tell the transmission is shifting - it's amazing.

11 days later and the transmission still has not arrived at the dealership. It's not due until the end of the month. I wonder how many others are waiting on this also...meanwhile, still driving the loaner....

transmission was replaced. 2 days later i noticed a whining noise when slowing down - around 40mph - coming from the middle/back of the car. Took it back..drove with the service manager. He said bad transmission! several weeks later I got it back with my second replacement. It's quite and shifts smooth as butter. Feels like a new car - mileage is now 49,300. Service advisor told me they've had a few other C300's in since with the same problem!.

sounds exactly like the problem I had. Get it fixed and don't take no for an answer. It's not normal.
