C350 charging system issues

My 2009 C350 charging system has quit working. Drove it to a location in the morning and it was fine. Got in the car in the afternoon and about a minute after starting it, the charging system red indicator display came on. Drove it home and eventually the battery went dead and the car shut itself down. Charged the battery but the charging system is not working. Getting under 12 volts with the engine at idle speed. Voltage Continues to drop. Not getting any output from the charging system at all.

Quick questions are, on a C class:

Is the voltage regulator a separate part from the alternator or are these integrated with each other? If they are separate, where is the regulator located?

I assume changing the alternator is not an easy task on this car? I am very mechanically adept and can fix just about anything. Anyone have experience changing an alternator on a C class?

Any other thoughts on possible issues? Maybe someone has been down this road before. Looking for a little info before I dig into it or take it to my local import shop. I probably won't take it to the dealer unless it's some computer issue that the shop can't fix it.

Thanks.

Sounds like a new alternator is in order. You can buy individual parts and repair it on your own or buy one from an auto parts store and get a lifetime warranty.

C350 2010, BMW 325i 2001, Porsche turbo 996 2002.
I don't have a lot of experience with my MB but lots with my Porsche turbo 2002 and was able to fix this issue by replacing the voltage regulator only! And I can confirm many Porsche owners did the same thing with success. I got the MB parts cat for the 2010 C350 and found a voltage regulator on Ebay for $96.00 part# 0031549306 . It is very easy to replace, you don't have to split the casing only remove the plastic cover to reach the regulator….The alternator is $1153.00!!! Ouch!!!If you give it a try please let us know if you succeed!!! Just went to look at the alternator on my car and I have to admit it is hidden in the bottom and a bit difficult to reach….
