Exploding / Shattered Sunroof (TriStar Mercedes, St Louis MO)

Space rock? More likely a rock from a vehicle a ways in front of you that didn't have proper mudflaps. Rock goes up in the air, and is coming down as you're driving underneath of it, breaking the glass. That's probably where the dealership linked the "damage" on the roof.
Reading this whole thread, I'm really surprised how quick the OP was to jump all over the dealer and alert the media. From the dates on the posts, it appears to be all within a couple days? As inconvenient as you may find it, these things take time.
I'm not saying that you weren't treated poorly at some of the points along the way, but once you start down the path of demanding immediate satisfaction and then alerting media, your odds of getting pleasant treatment go down dramatically. Service advisors and service managers are people, doing jobs. They are not a corporation. Having done that job for many years, I can honestly tell you that when a customer came at me sideways without giving me an opportunity to look into the issue and resolve it first, they immediately went to the back burner. Kharma is indeed circular, and you reap what you sow.
When you find a new dealership to go to, I highly recommend treating the service advisor like a human being, and keep in mind that he doesn't have the easiest of jobs. Most advisors work 11+ hours a day, often 6 days a week, and must balance warranty coverages vs. customer satisfaction vs. management expectations, on top of juggling the prima donna attitudes of many of their technicians. Your service advisor is someone you will see at every service or issue with your car, so does it make sense to **** in his wheaties the first time you meet? Hell, bring him food, or a food coupon early on. As an example, my old service advisor at VW was fantastic with me, simply because I showed him a little patience and respect, being that my first visit there it was quite clear he wasn't having the best of days. From that visit on, I received 20% off on all parts and labor through the service department every time, without asking. The $30 bottle of vodka I brought him at Christmas time paid for itself over, and over, and over...

Have seen this twice, in one case a rock was found in the back seat.
The other, the driver saw the rock being kicked up in front of him.
One cause can be road debris.
Edit, didn't read the previous post. But yes, Rocks can cause this problem. That is what glass insurance is for.

I recently experienced the same situation with the sunroof on my 2016 c300. Sunroof shattered while I was driving on the highway. Glass flew into the car cutting me, and seriously startling me. Glass also scratched the paint on the trunk of my car. I have been in contact with MB USA and they are only willing to cover 50% of the cost. The dealership is also claiming this is my fault. They are also claiming there have been no other instances of this happened.

My Panoramic roof on my 2001 C240 just shattered like described above while driving 55 mph on the highway. It will cost about$1500. Dealer said there is no recall. Everyone with this issue should file a report with NHTSA because it is a safety concern.
