Different Tire Size

I have a 4matic Sport and have found a good deal on used rims with winter tires. The stock size is 225 front, 245 rear. Will putting 235 all around affect anything?

Are the used wheels a staggered or square setup? If square you are fine if staggered you need to check a tire size calculator to make sure they are within 3% of each other or it can damage the AWD

In a 4matic you need to have the same size tires on all 4 wheels or you will blow the transfer case.

Staggered tires on 4matics are fine. Most NA sport 4matic comes standard from the factory with staggered tires. Just make sure the diameter wont be greater or less than 3%.

Another round of ICE
The goal on snow/ice is as narrow a tire as possible. 235 will deteriorate snow/ice traction vs 225. At a minimum, don't go beyond the OE front width of 225 at all four corners. The even better size for winter is 215/50-17 at all four corners. If you need to suddenly turn or brake, you will find this was not a place to save money. Blizzak WS80 or Michelin X-Ice xi3.

Will a 235/45 17 fit on the front with no clearance issues?

I am interested in the answer as well as I posted a similar question a week ago. Still no one has answered the question.

77gman77,

Looks like the 235s are about 0.4 in larger in Dia than the 225s which it needs about 0.2 in between fender and tire...should be no problem.

The Blizzaks generally have a more narrow tread for a given tire size (ie the 235 Blizzaks have 7.5 in tread with vs. 225 Mich Xice that is also 7.5" wide tread). Both will fit on staggered wheels but the 235 section width will be stretched less on the rears.

Can you explain why they are not allowed?

Just because 235's are not list as a standard size in the owners guide by MB does NOT mean they will not work.

Ofcourse they will work.
.....and about "allowed".
I dont know where do you live, but in my county & I think in most EU countries the sizes prescribed by factory are mandatory by LAW.
All modifications on wheels, tires ,...that are not on the list (& homologation)..... are "no go" through the MOT.

.....& on the end , in snow 225 are better than 235.
