1st front brake pad replacement
The dealer told me i needed new front pads and quoted $270. I use akebono pads on my other car for 2 years now with no problems. However, none of the independents I contacted will put on aftermarket pad so, even though I know they are good quality (and others do too) I can't find any place that I think is reputable to do it purely because they don't want any liability issues. One shop owner even said that there are parts better than OEM but he won't put them on.
catch 22.... So I guess I'm locked into paying stealership prices.

This is strange, I've had shops that recommended aftermarket brands to save cost before.
I myself prefer OEM because a premium car requires premium parts. Of course there are performance parts that cost more than OEM, but my car will never see track days to merit that type of upgrade.

After considering that the independents I contacted would do the work, the answer became clear : Performance shop. I found one and just got back from having the front pads replaced and I can attest that they appear to be fine. I used Akebono pads with zimmerman rotors on my volvo and they work fine.
In fact I replaced them over 1.5 years ago on the volvo and there's plenty of 'meat' left on the pads. I'm amazed that I haven't had to replace them yet. with OEM I was in at least once per year, including rotors....
The net : Better performing brakes (less noise and dust) at $100 cheaper than the dealer quoted.
Performance parts, sometimes, are a better option even if you aren't a 'stop light warrior'. The real bonus is that, if these prove out to last like they do on my other car, I'll spend less over the long-run and get better performance. That's a (pardon the cliche) "win-win".

MBWorld Fanatic!
I helped a friend put a set of Akebono's on his C300 Luxury. He wasn't after performance but was tired of brake dust! They have been on there for about 3 years and he loves them.
