Overhead dome light mods?

I really dislike the dome light in this car. It's rather blinding as well as unrefined looking. I see there is a LED bulb thread. Perhaps that would make for some better lighting? But what I would like it is to replace it with some focused beams. Much like the map lighting from the rear view mirror.

Best option would be a total drop in assembly replacement.

Next would be rewiring the dome to activate the rear view mirror lights.

Has anyone done the LED bulbs and found them to not be as jarring/blinding?

For now I have overhead lights off with the door but I may try removing the bulbs and keeping the back bulbs in. Not sure if that would start throwing any warning messages. I know on an Audi it would be grounds for an emergency warning.

I put in AZNOptic's LED in my dome lights and they are bright but good. I would recommend them if you are thinking about going to LED's.

Maybe an angled directional led might fix this. Something like this:
