Is this sound coming from your engine or is it a sound that you would like to come from your engine or are you thinking about duplicating the sound for your smart phone??

I just had my timing chain tensioner go on my 2013 C250 with the m271 engine and it sounded just like that. It was a diesel engine sound for a few seconds after startup. The other issue I had was a long crank time.

Regret the tensioner on your M271. I also have the 1.8 4-cyl M271.

You probably have under 40,000 miles on your C250. Now I'm worried.

I have 26,000 miles. But I wouldn't worry too much. This engine has a good history behind it. My car is just cursed in general. Although this was my first true, non-software or non-annoying sound related failure.

Sounds like timing chain slap until the oil pressure arrives.

+1 on the timing chain.
Of course it could be a sticky injector? Is this for cold starts only? How do hot and warm starts sound?

Timing chain tensioners.

Mine did this as well. Happened at just over 30,000 miles. Fixed under warranty

I have a 2013 c250 with under 58,000kms. Tensioner has gone and timing chain came off the sprockets. Estimate to fix is 20,098 plus taxes. Mercedes is saying this was caused by an oil filter that wasn't a "mercedes" one. Warranty was just barely up over a month, haven't even had the car for a year. Pretty disappointed that this is a obvious issue with the engine and seems they can and will find any reason not to stand behind their product.

Could it be the secondary air pump that comes on immediately (for a few seconds) after a cold start to help burn off the fuel? If you're just noticing this sound (its new), then it probably isn't it. But be aware there is a short-duration pumping sound that feeds extra air for emissions purposes. It helps burn off excess fuel during a cold start to prevent pollution.

What brand was the oil filter?
Was it a recommended filter?
Who fitted it ? You may be able to claim here.

58,000 km is a very low mileage. Sorry to hear of your predicament.

It was done by a company just before receiving the car. I am currently trying to get them to help. They had originally told me it was a mahle oil filter. I have picked it up from Mercedes and dropped it off, and now at their request have pickup up a litre of oil for testing and dropped that off as well. From what I could see it wasn't a mahle filter, it looked like a wix filter. Wix does make a filter for the car, I don't have much hope they will come back with any good news.

Can a filter cause this type of damage? Oil change was done at 48,000 and car is still under 58,000.

It's been a nightmare as this happened a month ago and have gotten the runaround and been paying for a rental. Don't feel I have done anything wrong as I haven't even had the car long enough to do an oil change.

I did a look up on the Wix filter website & found that they do make an oil filter for your car ie #WL10059 http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/App...aspx?Section=1

http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/Par...x?Part=2011241

If you have not had any low oil pressure alarms & if the oil test comes back OK then IMHO there has to be another reason for the failure.

I would be pushing the company who did the oil change service to take responsibility if the wrong filter or oil was added.

BCSC, I suggest you start a new separate thread on this site so more people can be aware of your issue.

Good luck.

Can anyone else on this fine & helpful website give any info on Wik filters?

Hi, ya good idea about a separate thread. No check engine lights or anything came on. Just the strange rattle diesel noise on startup. I was told by the Mercedes tech who heard it on startup said it sounded like the timing (I was in the car with him). This was under warranty when it was in for something else, but never marked it down. He had then told me no errors came up regarding the startup. I wish I knew now what I knew then.

I am trying to see what the company that did the oil change can do for me. I will see what the oil test comes back with, I'm not holding my breath. Just most likely spending more on a rental.

its a noise from the outstretched chain of the gas distribution mechanism. immediately to the service for the chain replacement. otherwise you will spend approx. $1.2k (with 2 Camshaft Adjuster) and a lots of other parts.
look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU15vRwUI0A
its a well known bag of the M271 engine

My car wouldn't turn over after being parking in a parking lot. Estimate as I've posted above is 20,098 plus taxes for engine replacement and turbo.
