Camshaft adjusters sticking

I am just out of warranty. MB has denied a "good will" claim. Dealer wants $4950 for repair. Says camshaft adjusters are sticking, causing p340 code and hard starting. My question is the repair is extensive for me and I am wondering is there an engine additive or something that may be able to free up the sticking adjusters? any advice would be greatly appriciated.

That's rough. All I can offer is to get an independent assessment and quote. Dealers tend to just replace everything and not problem solve as much.

There seem to be some google hits on M271 camshaft adjusters sticking.

Yea< I noticed it seems like a common problem. Real chicken Sh... MB won't step up to the plate on this. There;s a history of this issue. don't think I will have the dealer do the work, to expensive. Looking for insight what kind of job it is to do and any options I may have.

Keep us posted on what the indy shop says. I just had my timing chain tensioner go at 26,000 miles. Although the dealer seemed shocked about it themselves, especially after my recent string of bad luck.

Just as a shot in the dark. since the cam adjuster is sticking and on occasion free's itself up and starts ok. Is there an additive that might help or worth a try?

Interesting point. At less than 13 bucks a bottle I would definitely Liqui Moly Pro Line Engine flush it for sure, unless the specific failure mode has been identified as an electric one.

Let's see if I can find anything.

Edit : Initial reading tells me nothing in a bottle is going to fix that.

From what I understand they don't believe it is electrical. They did try a new sensor first and that didn't help. So they believe hydrolic cam adjuster.making me think mechanical. I'm ready to try anything before dumping $5k into this. Seems to run ok once it gets going, it just cranks like a diesel most of the time and once in a while it will just start normally, leading me to believe the sticky hydrolics freed itself up for that round.
