Andrew,

Sorry to hear, could you give us some details as to your car build, assembly plant as well as the size and mfr of tires/tyres involved?

Thanks.

MB W204, VW Polo, Audi R8 V10 - SOLD.
Do you think you have been pushing the car hard to cause this level of tyre wear?

get rid of the runflats and get yourself a set of Michelin Supersport tires. Way better ride, better performance and lasts much longer and most importantly should be cheaper.

Are your Continental ProContact GX or ContiSport Contact? 50K and 28K mi respectively.

Should check your tire coverage that comes with your car and see if there is any tread/mileage warranties on those babies. In addition, there's a Continental recall on those tire, check out if it's covered. Good luck.

Mine came with Pirelli Cinturato and I'm happy with them and they are rated to 50K mi.

16000 miles isn't too bad.

Maybe because I was used to replacing my rear tires on my 507 every 4000 miles!

Benz cars are quite heavy on tyres. My CLK has just hit 20K miles & the tyres are completely shot. (German manuf. Conti Sport Contact 3 which I hate). About to fit Michelin PS3's which I know I will love from previous experience but I'm not expecting any greater mileage. 20K is fine with decent tyres.

Decent performance tyres have fairly soft compounding. You can't have it both ways. Long life tyres do not perform well.

On a side note, I checked my boot and have no spare and no
Tyre foam. God forbid I get a flat.

I am not an expert but I think you must have run flats, in the sales stuff I noticed the car had run flats, when I checked this with the salesman before purchase he said they were not run flats, yet when the car arrived they had them on the car
I would assume if you have no spare or foam then they are run flats but someone else will know

They are runflats. Mercedes however don't use true runflats. The use original extended use tires (MOE). In this way they are not as stiff as runflats and also provide better comfort.

I opted for tire and rim insurance which was roughly $650. This will cover damage to both as well as towing (which MB should cover anyway) I'm likely to rash my rims in Sydney so a good investment in my book.

Tire wear is very sensitive to alignment. Has anyone checked alignment on the MB? The key to watch is to make sure toe is not excessive. I have been wondering if MB has the same issue as BMW regarding alignment. Since I don't read much about it, I figure it should be good. It would be nice for someone with experience to shine on this subject.

Not sure on the 205s as they have changed to a multi link front end. The 204s had very limited alignment options, I belice caster and camber were non changeable. Just toe!

All Benz cars with the previous set up were fully adjustable with the 3 way fluted bolt kit in the castor & camber bushes. Due to very accurate body building they came from works with a standard bolt in the center position.
