So does the standard system not have turn-by-turn directions? or is the Garmin, just the interface piece?

When the option of mounting an external GPS device isn't in play, and considering the price of the alternative (Command) I think it is well worth it. Just be aware that you have to pay for future map updates.

There is Garmin or Command. The Standard system does not have navigation. At least not in Europe.

I'm trying to decide if Garmin is worth the 600 bucks.

In US there is base no navigation, Garmin SD card (600 MSRP), or Command (multimedia package)

You need to add the Multimedia Package in order to get the built-in navigation unit on a US build. The package includes more than just the navigation though so, IMHO, it's worth the extra money. If you're only concerned about navigation, the add on Garmin unit is excellent and arguably even better than the MB unit.
