C200 4matic
Replaced all front speakers with Morel. The C200 only has 3 speakers as OEM, I now have 6 speakers. Tweeters, Mids and foot well subs ( 6,5) powered by a GZ sub ( 4 channel) the JL sub is powered by a 4 channel Alpine bridged to power the sub. improvement is insane!

Mike and Vlad...I have to say thanks for all the research and for answering all the questions that have come your way. It is pretty cool to see everyone helping each other out.

As far as sound goes, I always felt like the Burmester System was meh...I own a Civic with some Infinity coaxials and a cheap Pioneer 10" sub and it sounds way better than the Burmester in my W205. Having said that it would be good to recap what people have used so that we know where we stand.

DSP-AMP:
So far, it looks like we the Audison (8.9, 5.9 or 4.9) as well as the Match 5DSP are good options. Has anyone looked into the Helix V EIGHT DSP? It seems like it has more channels than the Audison and it puts out more power.

Speakers
4" Coaxial:
4" Components: Focal KRS100 - Focal ES100K
Footwell Subs: Hertz Energy 6.5

Everyone...let me know what you have used that has fit so I can add it to the list and make it easier for everyone to find.

Mike, Did you have success with any other sub for the footwell other than the Hertz 6.5?

I removed the Frontbass unit today and here's what it looks like. It's not the same as the Burmester one, slightly smaller, with a 6.5" speaker and a plastic cover, not metal. The speaker is glued onto the frame. The depth of the speaker is 65mm and the entire available depth in the unit is 80mm (speaker should be at least 5mm less). The speaker is "baked" into an 8" box (196mm to be exact) so 8" speakers should fit. I'll take it to my local shop tomorrow and we'll try to fit an 8" into the unit.

The two electronic units need to be moved out of the way - held by 4 bolts in total

Frontbass ported box

6.5" speaker, Frontbass frame and the insulated back cover

196mm wide speaker unit with a 6.5" speaker

65mm deep speaker unit

Vlad,

Thanks for the info on the Non Burmester.
I did some research and found the following midbass drivers/subs that may fit given the mounting depth of 65mm that you measured.

The Alpine, can fit under the seat since it is already enclosed.

6.5" - Mounting Depth (mm) - Power Handling in RMS
Hertz MP 165.3 - 63 mm - 90w
Hertz EV 165.5 - 70mm - 70w
Hertz EV F165.5 - 51mm - 60w
JL Audio ZR650-CW - 67mm - 85w
JL Audio C5-650cw - 65mm - 75w

8"
Helix E 8W - 58mm - 200w
Match MS 8B-BMW.2 - 40mm - 150w
Alpine PWE-S8 - 125 w- Powered

The other issue with the enclosure is that it tapers down really steeply from the baffle to the back, and space for the magnet is almost non-existent. OEM uses a neodymium rare earth magnet that's a fraction the size of a standard one.

So many constraints for good sound...lol

I don't have my car because it has been in the shop for a month and a half...any way we can get a picture of the stock sub or a measurement from the magnet to the baffle?

Mike...is it the same taper issue on the Burmester? Vlad said the enclosure was different on the Burmester.

I can only attest to the Burmester enclosure, although I think the modules themselves are the same size externally with different speaker sizes.

Discovering that they were 6.5" woofers rather than large actual subs was encouraging. A 3 way with a 6.5" woofer, 4" mid and a tweeter is a nice full range array. Just tuning out the sub frequencies from them and bringing the bottom back with an external sub cabinet and amp instead works great. I haven't been pursuing upgrading the Frontbass stuff much because it sounds good to me as is. Also I just blew $2k on a new 4K UHD TV.

Mike,

What is the difference in size between the footwell speakers in the A20 and the Burmester. I thought they were both 6.5"?

I did too, but in pics the design of the speaker and grille in the A20 looks different. The grille is simpler and the speaker looks smaller.

Ah... I see. Let's see if anyone posts so we can clarify that.

By the way...quickly off topic but how do you like your new TV? I have been thinking on buying one myself.

Really nice. 65" Sony something or other. Has built in Netflix, YouTube, PlayStation. Amazon. YouTube and Netflix have 4K libraries, but everything looks good on it. My Blu Ray rips especially. I was concerned that anything less than 4K material would look bad but that wasn't the case. Prices keep coming down. Best Buys store brand 65" is under a grand and looks great .

I installed the new woofer last night. Got an old but unused Morel 8" slim woofer and installed it into the Frontbass frame. It was extremely difficult, took me 4 afternoons to do the whole thing so I wouldn't recommend it. The frame is odd shaped (had to use a thick rubber spacer), space is too tight, difficult access to the speaker, lots of things to remove...
But the result is so sweet...
Definitely the biggest single change.

The 8" barely fits the frame.

A lot of work to match the rubber spacer to the frame.

Just a couple of mm of clearance after all went back in.

There are tons of aftermarket speakers on the market. They ship with grilles to fit your vehicle as well. I upgraded mine with infinity reference series both front and back.

Hello. Just looking at replacing the base in the driver footwell. Do these actually work?? Mine seems to do nothing. Has anyone just replaced the base driver only? Just not keen on doing the boot thing.

You won't get enough "juice" from the HU to run a decent woofer. You really need an amp, at least a mono.

OK but I can use the Output from the HU by the speaker and add an additional amp? But is that small speaker in the drivers side footwell on only driver? It feels like there is bass somewhere under the dash but the small speaker does not seem to move?

Love the pics on the thread previously. That's obviously the bass and not the small one by the foot well. Where is that ported bass?? Is it still up under the drivers side foot well??

It's at the front of the passenger footwell. Maybe you can see the location better here.
The woofer is behind the black plastic cover.
To get to it you have to remove the plastic plate under the glove box, then take out the entire carpet (comes out as one piece), remove the plastic cover shown in the pic below and then move two electronic units out of the way (shown in post #153)

H, Thank you. Part of the confusion is that yours must be left hand drive as the stainless still door sill is visible on the right. I am in Australia so it's the other way around. Wow that looks like a bit of work. So did you just change this or did you also place a sub in the boot.

No, I only did this one. I need the space in the boot. It doesn't give earth shattering lows but it does go down to 35Hz which is good enough for me. The stock woofer only goes down to 65Hz.

Vlad . Many thanks. Yours appears to be the only post that shows where this is so well done. We were all scratching our heads. I am a bit the same, would live a base in the rear but not at the expense of boot space. I am also going to try and get this replaced on the weekend. Probably a compact one from Focal. They do some very narrow ones. What I may ask them to do is take a cable off the existing as well as a signal if I then decide to do something in the rear later. "Put one of those under the seat units on the back parcel tray". Now that would be different.

Hi Mike,

As a low cost relatively quick bang for the buck, do you think an under seat powered Sub such as the Kenwood KSC-SW11 is worthwhile to compliment the facotry Burmester. I have the elephant Candy EQ and whilst it helps......

I am not an audiophile and need to retain all available space in my S205, but as an auto manuf engineer getting it in will be a nothing job.. (so long as there is space under the passenger seat...)... just looking for a warmer less strained bass and i imagine by turning down the burmester bass it may allow the midrangecentric speakers perfrom more effectively?

Thanks for your thoughts..

I think if you could get a small powered sub under the seat(s) it would give you the bass extension you're looking for.
