It Appears We're Screwed: Update on the C32 Extended Warranty Problem

Well, it does appear that C32 owners in California are screwed if seeking extended warranties. Based on decent leads in this forum I have contacted about 10 different outfits this week, including the usual assortment of online brokers, local dealers, etc.

The excuses range from AMG exclusions to not wanting to touch California.

So, I'm getting ready to assume the position when my CPO expires in March!

Maybe, maybe not my friend... if you haven't had the usual problems occur in the initial 4-5 years and 50k+ miles, it's fairly unlikely that they'll just randomly pop up thereafter. Exception is the IC pump, but that is a fairly easy/quick/inexpensive replacement... maybe a couple other exceptions as well, but I don't recall reading from owners that "after 6 years and 100k miles, now my radiator and tranny went bad" or anything like that.

That is a very good point. If your car has been operating okay, then you're likely taking good care of it, and won't see major problems unless something out of the ordinary happens.

However, just to be on the save side, I would keep trying different warranty companies until you find one. Have you tried Chrysler warranty. I've read that they sell Mercedes extended warranty for cheaper prices and you still can service the car at any Mercedes dealership. Also, I take it you've tried Mercury Auto Insurance?

Could be worse, you could be a newly diagnosed cancer patient looking for health insurance. Have you tried warranty brokers? How about Continental warranty out of North Hollywood?

I tried Mercury Auto and they told me they no longer cover the C32 AMG. I said the car is a 2003 with 30K miles and still under Benz warranty for another 2 years and I want to buy another year or two. She said sorry do not show we offer it for your car. She was more surprised than I.

Try Auto Warranty Broker. They got an extended warranty for my C55 last year. Don't know if there is a problem due to year of your car.

I purchased my used '05 C55 from a Chrysler dealership, and told them I would not make the deal unless they provided an extended warranty with it. They ended up including a 3yr 45k mile full service ("Added Care Plus") Chrysler branded warranty. He said they sell quite a few MB's off their lot, and assured me that all my repairs can be done through any MB dealership. I only have a $100 deductible with this plan, which made it a great value.

I don't know if they would sell it to you if you didn't buy the car from them, but it certainly would be worth a trip to a Chrysler dealership to talk to someone about it.

Chrysler Warranty?

Hmm...I never knew that you could get a warranty through Chrysler. Does anyone know if you can get a warranty from Chrysler if you bought your car from a private seller?

I've checked around for aftermarket warranty's. A bunch of them seem so shady, I get spam email for warranty's, I just don't trust 'em all, lol. One company called my phone literally about 30 times, in a matter of days.

I respond to these questions the same way every time. Go to the place where you get your car serviced and ask them which warranty companies they like to use, they will tell you who is good and the ones that dispute everything. If that doesn't work, set up a savings account with approximately $3K and only use it for the major service costs.

Thumbs up

Gotta love California where nothing is the same as the rest of states. I looked into this about 6-8 months ago with the same results. There is something where the California Dept. of Insurance states warranties cannot be sold in CA unless through a dealership. I had one company out of Ohio that was willing to sell me and they called me constantly to close the deal. I asked them about warranties in CA and they come back asking me if I have an address outside of CA??????? I guess it's true.

Go through you car tooth and comb and get the dealer to correct anything that is wrong. All the things that went out on mine were pretty small things that are really DIY items once out of warranty. The crank, connecting rods and everything else internal to this motor are rock solid.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm still working it (up to about 15 rejections now).

Will definietely let you know if I get a hit - then it's time for a group buy!

The suggestions about how to deal without a warranty are also wise, especially the sinking fund - thanks.

Please let me know if you find a company that will do it. I had no such luck finding one.

I don't want to "jinx" myself but after an initial spate of problems with my '02 C32 between 29k (March 2007) and 37k (October 2007), it's been flawless since, even in this miserable Chicago winter. Granted, it hasn't been that long but I'm hopeful a lot of the glitches were simply because the car had been driven so little in the first 5 years of its life. I'm still going to spring for another year of extended warranty when mine expires in March but I'm keeping fingers crossed.

Found it but expensive. Group buy?!

Ok guys, after nearly 20 dead ends, I finally found someone who seems legit willing to write these on a 2003 C32.

Park Avenue Motors, a new car dealer in Palo Alto, CA (www.parkavenuemotors.com), is quoting $4,600 for Western General's Platinum level coverage for 24 months or 24k miles.

Crazy expensive. This amount of money is almost a third of the car's value and alot of crap would have to hit the fan for it to make sense.

Nevertheless, the guy I talked to sounded curious about a group buy. He would need to check with the Finance department.

Would anyone be interested in a group buy if we could somehow get it down to low $4k or high $3k?

At that cost roll the dice. 90% of the things than can go wrong on this car are fixable if your good with the wrench.
