Thumbs up Campaign#2008010001: how I lost then found 30+hp

Had my C55 for more than a year now & was noticing a loss of performance... Maybe I was just getting used to the the car.

After NOT being able to pull a newer Mudstain GT (possible mods ... it was pretty loud) on the highway, I figured I had lost some ponies plus I was down a few mpg on the highway. I was considering hitting a dyno to see what was what.

Took the car in for an A Service & was told one of my CAT's had a cracked element & would be replaced under Campaign/Warranty.

I had zero expectations for better perfromance since the element was cracked not plugged.

Well, the busted element must have destroyed the air flow & created tons of back-pressure... kinda like stuffing a cute 15 lb kitty into your CAT (take that PETA).

After driving from the dealer, the off-the-line & mid to top end RPM was much different. The C55 rev's much easier & the HP change is VERY noticeable.

Stealer confirmed there was no re-flashing of the ECU just a CAT R&R and a detail

Have a good weekend!

Is this a Tech Bulletin or a recall or just a warranty item?

according to the paperwork ...

It was called a Campaign ... probably a "fix as fail", probably not a complete recall for every C55.

Maybe check w/ your Stealer next time you're in.

This was not exactly a recall because i never got anything in the mail about it. But last i was in for service I had these 2 secondary cats replaced. My pipes were fine but My SA told me my vin number was in the 2000 or so cars thats affected. Next time you go for service they'll let you know. Took about a week to get the parts in.

you should see the ridiculous prices for those cats. SA showed me their invoice. it was ~$1300 per cat. thats $2600 in parts alone. Glad i didn't have to foot the bill.

Now you have some idea of the difference between OE quality and aftermarket junk.

I hope that's sarcasm ... those OE quality CATs lasted 30,000 miles & gave my car constipation.

On the bright side, I made the guy in the Mudstain's day ... he pulled next to me and asked if I had it floored. I could not lie

You lucky dog ... we're still waiting for diesels in CA ... unfortuantely it's $4+ per gallon these days here.

Dealership is replacing my cats under warranty for this same campaign. I bought my C55 used about 7 months ago. Hope I see the same increase because I haven't exactly been overwhelmed by the power. But then again I traded a 2000 6 speed manual Corvette (+ $'s) for it.

Just a note, there have been a ton of cars around the country that have been getting their cats stolen by people trying to salvage the platinum and other rare metals. Apparently you can get $800 in scrap from a 7 series. Considering the cost to replace yours, I'm not surprised why it is so common.
