255s rubbing! Need healthier friends!!

Ok, so I had friends visiting this last weekend- Decided to take everyone out to the range in the C55. Four people including myself with munitions and peripherals in the trunk (not a whole lot) Big friends tho
Under about 3/4 acceleration from a light I hear this shrill whine coming from the right rear. I let off and pace the sheep the rest of the way- upon arrival I discover shavings of the sidewall hanging off from rubbing the inner fender!
What gives?
I am running 40 series 255s in the rear (PO installed)
They are Bridgestone Potenza re760s
Anyone ever rub with 255s?!? I could expect this with 265s, but damn!

Given how much weight you had on there, you may have rubbed with the standard 245's! I wouldn't worry too much. Just drove to Miami and back to VA with about 3-400lbs combined in the trunk and back seat and I rubbed on big bumps every now and again. And I'm running 255/35's.

eclectic assortment of cars
I think your 255/40s have a bearing on the rubbing issue. Proper 255 fitment should be 255/35s.

Or perhaps you need the 'no fat chicks / car will scrape' sticker?!?

Good to hear, I figure there was another 700 lbs besides myself in the car. I won't worry too much then.
Boy, the car pulled like a raped ape when I went to work solo the next day

You can also get your fenders rolled pretty cheaply.

Ah,that would be an option. Did it with my Miata, for some reason didn't consider that here. Ill think about that if it begins to be an issue-thanks!

Yeah you should be a 35 series tire in the back
i ran a 265/30 19 on my C32, so a 255 is plenty wide enough.

yeah - I kinda wish I needed tires (never thought I would say that) but having taller tires in the back bothers my OCD side. Buying tires on my girlfriends vw this weekend has me itching to replace mine. Anybody have luck with a particular tread/brand on these cars? My experience is mostly on lighter imports/aircooled
cheers

feel greasy compared to the Micheline Super Sports I picked up on sale. I could get the rear kicked out pretty easily on one particular turn and have yet to do so trying a bit harder on the SSs. Super Sports are noticeably quieter too, even w/ what may be stiffer sidewalls. I can run less pressure in the Super SPorts compared to the V12s too. V12s were mush until I nearly maxed out their pressures and then the ride was horrible.

Yeah, this is my thought process, at about a hundred dollar premium per tire those SSs are hard to justify for me right now.

Ive had Hankooks before and I liked them a lot

When I bought my SSs, the price difference was only $100.00 more total. $30.00 more rear and $20.00 more for the fronts, I couldn't not do it. Michelin was (and still is or again) running a buy 4 get a $70. Visa card back, so effectively, I only paid ~ $30.00 more for the Michelins or I probably would've went V12s again. Maybe Conti DWs or whatever they're called.

I am running 255/40/19 on the back with fenders rolled, and H&R springs. It rubs every time I hit any sorts of bumps.

Thanks man!

I moved the tires from another wheels that I have. I would definitely go with 265/35 for my next set of tires.

I do however liked the slightly thicker sidewalls and my solution is to not give a ride to more than one person at a time

When I had my 19's and ran a 265-30-19, I still rubbed over hard cornering or passengers in the rear. And I'm rolled too.

Now, I'm running 255-35-18 and it's perfect!

Sorry to confuse everyone,

I meant to say I am running 255/35/19 now, not 255/40/19 (which will definitely rub in any position ).

I would love the extra traction of 265s on my C55, but with this rubbing (though I'm sure its 40series related) I am scared off them. These cars need all the contact patch they can get!

The previous owner put these BFGoodrich g-force sports on my car but at least got the right size by putting 255/35ZR18 rears on the factory rims. They are really good even with four passengers and heavy shopping in the trunk. They cost about the same as Hankook Ventus v12s but they are not nearly as popular as the Hankooks. I think they are fine but I am no tire expert, they look cool though. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....m=535WR8GFSPC2
