C55 Bizarre Problem

Hey AMG peeps,

My dad and I were driving the C55 tonight, pretty spirited to say the least (frequent 3rd gear pulls to 80ish in S mod). We got home and parked the car for the night, something came up were we needed to go out again, and the car wouldn't start...

Everything turned on (headlights, taillights, dash, etc.) and the car would only crank (trying to turn on). We tried to turn it off then turn it back on again with the same result.

Frustrated, we left the car for about 30minutes then tried again... started right up; however the check engine light was on. We drove it around for a few minutes and the check engine light was still there.

We parked it, left it for about a minute, then restarted it... check engine light's gone

My question is, did the car overheat? Have any of you guys experienced this? Any help would be grateful.

- Shawn

More than likely it's the CPS (crank position sensor). It's a common problem...

Get that code read ASAP. Get over to an Autozone or something and they should still be able to pull the code from it.

Thanks for the reply guys, I know I should search, but is the CPS something that will harm the car? My dad and I push the car all the time and last night was the first time that happened.

Has this problem repeated at all? If not I would just wait on it, and see if it does. At that point I would replace CPS. Check for pending codes...

Not since, no... I was reading through some threads, and it seems that the problem will persist getting worse each time; eventually leading to the car shutting off while driving?!?!

AHHH! The car died on my dad today. We'll take it to our dealership, however I heard you can get the sensor much cheaper elsewhere? I also heard it is a pain to remove the old sensor and install the new one. Does anybody have insight on this?

I was thinking about asking the part/service guy to show me a diagram of the location or something... we shall see....

HA! Merc of Calabasas wants $500+ for the sensor and labor... I found an Indie shop in the SFV that Will do it for about 200 (sensor and labor). Has anyone heard of MBZ Motors on winnetka and Roscoe?

The annoying this is, I think I'm mechanically inclined enough to swap out the senor myself... if I knew where it was and what tools were needed.

I could look into it for you if you get no replies from people who have already done the swap. Yes, parts can print you out a diagram, and yes, you can find the sensor cheaper than at the dealership. Autohausaz is one of my main suppliers. I would assume the job isn't too terribly hard, but in a lot of cases special tools are required. You can consider the cost of tools, and all to still be saving money compared to having someone do it for you. Then you will also have the tools if ever needed again... By the way, I've heard numerous complaints about Mercedes of Calabasas when I was searching for my C32! However, all the dealerships tend to be the same, and have terrible customer service. I always find the parts associates to be the only ones friendly, and helpful. At my local dealership I only trust, and get along with three people. Two work in parts, and the attractive receptionist...

Thanks for the reply, my dad wants MBZ Motors to do the work. Apparently he knew of MBZ Motors before I told him. Makes my life a little easier, and makes his wallet $200 lighter lol.

I would if the 55 was my car, but my dad feels better having the indie shop do the work.

Don't quote me on this, but from what I understand, the sensor will not allow fuel to be distributed until the sensor gets a signal... Might want to do a search of your own, it appears that several C32s and C55 have this problem
