Do not change transmission fluid on higher mileage transmission???

I know with BMWs it is not recommended to use new transmission fluid on higher mileage vehicles. This is due to the tolerances in the transmission getting larger from wear and new fluid will not be too thin to work properly.

Does this apply to Mercedes? I have 85k miles on my car but am hesitant to change the transmission fluid.

Any feedback?

Thanks,

Derek

this is only my opinion, but change it immediately!

Mercedes uses very fine particulate transmission filters and they get clogged easily and quickly.

From what I've heard a full flush is not recommended due to dislodging metal particles and leaving them free floating in the transmission past filter point. Drain and filter change is not considered a problem. It's when you disconnect line to pump out all fluid. Did so on my C32 but it was required due to radiator failure mixing coolant with transmission fluid.

I used to have 4.4 X5, so I know what you meant about not changing BMW's tranny oil at higher miles if it has never been replaced before.

The BMW dealer had a way to check whether the tranny oil is burned or not, and if it is already burned, they suggested to just leave it alone.

My X5's tranny was already burned at 85K miles and the dealer suggested not to change it. I sold it to a friend and the car has 120K miles now and runs fine.

MB however seems to have better tranny than BMW, my old C280's tranny was changed 120K miles and it was completely fine until the day I parted with it at 190K. Either way, good luck!

I think its safe. If for no other reason, MB transmissions differ from others in that they are one of the few manufactures who design and build their own automatic transmissions. This is opposed to most manufacturers who source their transmissions.

I know of 722.6's behind V8s with close to 200K that are serviced every 60K.

Changing the fluid & filter every 60k miles is about right. That's what I have done and have had no problems with my tranny to date, 109k miles.

Definitely do it now! Don't cheap out either, use the real MB filter, gaskets, and fluid. It only takes 4-5 liters when dropping the pan.

I would change it, I have seen plenty of the mbs get changes past 100k mi with no problems. Just drain and slap new filter and gasket in. Don't flush it.

I'm at 87k and I replaced mine at around 83k. I've had no problems.

There are some DIY's, you will have to do a search. There are at least a couple I have read for the C32, I am not sure how different they are. I also agree with the changing filter, magnet, topping up fluid but not doing a full flush.
