Head Unit Help
I need someone to help inform or point me in the right direction. My mechanic told me after many hours of testing and troubleshooting today that my head unit is done and needs to be replaced in order to get music or anything. The car is a C55 2005 with Harman Kardon and Nav. I found a thread earlier that said it was basically plug and play to upgrade the regular head unit to one with the nav screen. I don't have the funds right now to rebuild or purchase a new nav h.u. so I was wondering if it would be plug and play to essentially downgrade my nav to the basic h.u.?

the h/u would need to come from a car that has the HK. not all c classes had HK sound. and also your cluster would need to be paired with HU to get button functionality and display

When I put in a nav from the stock radio, it was plug and play. I don't know what your center screen will say if you're going backwards. Regardless, it may not be a big issue.
I found one for you here on LKQ; you may be able to negotiate possibly. http://www.lkqonline.com/partdetail/~87876613

So I found this head unit and it looks just slightly different, mine looks like the one in vipers Sig. And it says its NTG 2? I'm assuming mine is an earlier version so would this be a suitable replacement?http://m.ebay.de/itm/291385602419?nav=SEARCH

I have my oem radio I just swapped out for pioneer 6000nex. It isn't the nav unit just the basic radio. Car has 40k miles and radio worked perfectly. If you're interested shoot me a pm and let's talk.

The european versions (APS) are not the same as the north american versions (MCSII). Your north american maps won't work, it's fairly difficult to make it work (search here back about 5 years and you'll see). I wouldn't buy that if I were you.
It should be plug and play, I had no issues swapping, no dealer coding necessary or anything (although since I didn't have it coded, the nav doesn't display in my gauge cluster, but it doesn't matter to me).

By the way, if it's "sound" you're looking for, be careful it might be the amplifier and not the head unit. Amplifiers are more common to go out on this car than the headunit.

OK, thanks for the heads up on the APS. Yeah I was hoping it was the amp or the CD changer or really anything else. Back during the summer of 2014 is when it first started acting up. The sound would just shut off unprovoked for various lengths of time. Then beginning of this past week the radio, CD, and aux all won't produce sound and the screen is completely gray (like it's muted but nothing affects it). At the end of the summer I got a working amp from a fellow member on here and swapped them out. It had no affect as the issue continued unchanged. Yesterday I had my local private MB specialist spend more time than he'd like to admit testing each of the Most ring components individually for functionality and even coding bypass for the CD changer. They decided it was the head unit. They checked if any codes were thrown and it said MOST ring break but couldn't identify where, also leading them to believe in the head unit!
