Corroded Rotors - How to fix? Help please
Hey Gents,
My c55 has been sitting for a while and the front rotors are corroded with a layer of surface rust. While driving it, I tried braking hard to get rid of the build-up but it didn't work. Also, when breaking the car shakes quite a bit as a result of the condition of the rotors. Any advice on how to get rid of the corrosion (trying to avoid buying a new set of rotors).
Any input/advice is really appreciated.
Thanks,
R

little braking vibration could cause from some thick rust in differ places, or pads surface not equal thick, or caliper piston not giving enough pushing,
if Rotors & pads in good condition, then try to clean them with brake cleaner or get-off the rust by using grinder with polycarbide wheel,,
it depends how thick of rust..!

You need to have the rotors resurfaced to remove the rust and make them true again. It's cheaper at this point to just replace them, they can be had quite reasonably at many online vendors

Centric rotors are $50/ea so assuming you're paying more than $20/ea to have them turned, labor is the same, I'd spend the little extra and start with brand new rotors that will have more life left. But for me brakes are always a priority, a lot of people don't seem to care so much.

$52/ea for the drilled ones, a little less for the non-drilled. I guess call it $60 with the shipping. Still not much more than having them cut and not worth the difference IMO.

Too bad it´s expensive shipping and risk for tax and toll.
I can resurface discs for penny´s
About $30 each, if they´re unbolted from car, anybody with higher price is a ripoff(in sweden anyway).
There´s no big job this (Make my living att ABB turning stuff in an cnc lathe all day)
Taking me about 1.5hrs to complete four discs.
makes a decent dollar for the hour.
Just a funny note, In Las Vegas at this very time, they´re installing new transformators to ensure powerfeed.
Guess who´s been turning all the flanges and stuff?

Hey All,
Thanks for all your input. I put 50 miles or so on the car over the past couple days and with some normal/heavy breaking the rotors are now clean with no surface rust, however I still have some vibration when I break.
amgen (or anyone) - may you please elaborate on the bushings that may possibly be causing the vibration. I had a shop check my rotors and pads and they have plenty of life left on them.
Thanks, gents!

When I changed my front rotors (AMG) I asked my tech to check front bushings. He changed 2 per side (the one showed in the picture and another
one to the left) and told me that worn bushings often result in vibrations when braking.
I did an alignment after that, which was necessary.
