A/C operation question

Question for the experts here. I'm looking at a C55 around me to purchase and I'm not really familiar with how the A/C works in regards to the engine fan. When the car is set to manual climate and the A/C is on, the cabin did not cool down. When climate was set to AUTO the engine fan kicked on high and the cabin cooled right down.

So the question is what the heck is going on? I would expect the manual mode to still run the fan to provide A/C right?

It should, when I have mine on auto and I hop in it when it's hot out it sound like a Harrier jet. The fans run at full blast, if I manually turn down the fan speed auto mode kicks off but it still cools.

In manual mode you have to set the fan manually in order to start A/C.

Yeah I get the interior fan setting and how that works, the air coming out was just blowing hot. I was referring to the engine fan. I noticed as soon as I set the climate control to AUTO the engine fan raced on to ready for take off speed and the AC blew cold, before when in manual their was no cold air, like the engine fan was not running to pull air through the condenser.
