I would change it if you're doing a service. They were leaking externally for a few years but the early ones leaked internally and sent the oil to the control unit. Worth replacing just to remove that risk since it's impossible to check and very cheap.

I have to tell you that after 2 days of driving around town my car
shifts up and down much smoother that it did. I did not think it
shifted bad before. There was a little fluid on the plug when I pulled
it so I cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner. I would definatey
recommend changing this part when you change your fluid if it has not
been changed. It is very easy to change. Look at the sticky's for
instructions. It costs between $6-9.00 at most auto parts stores or
online. I never noticed it leaking untill recently. It makes me wonder
when it started leaking inside where the plug connects.

Hmm, Mine started leaking quickly on the outside also. I think it may
have been leaking a little on the inside earlier because it shifts much
smoother now. Did you find fluid on your plug also? I just have this
feeling that some people who have shift issues/problems, this could be
where some of their issues start. I really think it is not a bad idea
to change this part every so often. I know it is probably overkill but
it such an inexpensive part that can cause so much damage.

at our shop due to their failure rate we replace them at every service,
or if they are leaking we recommend a service when the plug is leaking.
we also give the customers the option of a transmission service every
60K, we have seen many 722.6 units fail at or near 100K due to lack of
service.
the usual suspect is the planetary gearset failing.
mercedes doesn't recommend servicing the unit at all, and after model
year 2000 they have eliminated the torque converter drain plug

I just did this a few weeks ago. PITA!!!! The adapter plug screw stripped which is connected to the conductor plate. The valve body had to be dropped and I had to replace the conductor plate and install a new adapter plug. Very tedious and time consuming. If your lucky yours wont strip. Its just a very bad design.

Best to replace it when the transmission is cold, but there is always a risk that you may need to replace the electrical plate if it strips

I just found out that my car is leakin' oil from the transmission,
I just bought this part too and I'm going to install it next week.
So how often does the conductor plate gets in trouble because of this lousy plug that leaks oil=?

I just had mine plug changed it's tight and sealed now, My tech guy had to add 2,5 litres of fluid in the transmission
