Resonator Delete
I know this is a topic that has been discussed over and over, so I apologize in advance, but just thought I'd cover this real quick.
I got stuck working some Saturdays and since I'm salaried, I don't get paid any more to be here and I'm basically in an on call role, so I figured I'd see if there was anything I could do on the car while I was here.
I decided to take the resonator out since I have access to everything here in terms of a welder, plasma cutter, etc. First off, the OEM exhaust pipes are metric sizes, so that made it a little interesting. I ordered a 2.5" to 2.5" Y Pipe and it was too big on one side and too small on the other, but that was as close as I could get.
Just an interesting tidbit, the stock resonator weighs 13.9 lb and my new center section set up, including the stock sections of piping weighs 8 lb, so I'm guessing I probably saved in the realm of 8 to 10 pounds. The stock piping is much thicker than the aftermarket stuff, so I'm sure it accounted for a majority of the 8 lb as well as the cast flanges.
Anyways, we'll see how she sounds tomorrow. I ran it with no catback for a minute and that is definitely a mean (but loud) sound. My girlfriend couldn't believe that sound was coming from the Mercedes

where did you pick that y-pipe up, looks of good quality. 304? Or mild? Looks like 304 stainless from the pics. I'm planning on doing this on the C36. How will you deal with the post-o2 sensor after the cat? Just ignore CEL codes or pop in a bypass chip?

In regards to the O2 sensor, there wasn't one after the secondary cats on mine. I'll look for it when I get back under there shortly to put it back in.

I'll get some clips today hopefully. I gotta clean up the inside of some of the welds because they're interfering with the slip fit.

If
If you're getting super sprint exhaust and delete the resonnator, you can make staight pipes from header back. So, you don't merge exhaust gas with y- pipe.

I removed the secondaries a while ago, there is no O2 sensor after the secondaries.

Picked up Sunday my SS secondary cat and resonator bypass pipe Will take some pics and measurements before getting the pipe installed. I promise to make two sound tracks: 1x before and 1x after modification. I will also try and get a dyno run done before doing the exhaust mod

I'm searching everywhere to get the stock measurements for secondary cat outlet and res outlet to muffler. Was the 2.75" the output to the muffler? So I would want a Y-pipe coming from the stock cat's at 2.5 each going to 2.75" back?

Hey thanks Denis, I've been looking for that link. Indeed that is probably the best and coolest way to remove the resonator while keeping the secondary cats. The resonator and cat delete way is a hassle because I have to remove this set-up and replace with the standard exhaust for the technical inspection every two years then after the rest remove the standard and refit the other exhaust. I tried going through the test with the modified exhaust but the inspectors saw it and said that's a no go man.
With the straight pipe which has all the OE fittings, the inspectors may not see anything wrong specially if the pipe has lost it's new shine. The vehicle would probably pass without a bat lid like that.

my ebay exhaust pipe looks more OEM original fit which is bolted onto the rest of the exhaust.
i never heard anything from inspection tech.
your UK pipe gives more of a homemade modification to inspectors, therfore you won't pass inspection, when it looks original fit they won't say anything and you will act like it's raining.
if they comment on the new pipe, tell them you bought it brand new from dealership because the old silencer broke down from wear n tear issues
as you're not getting younger anymore, it ain't fun crawling under the car everytime to remove the roaring pipe and refitting the original stuff.
get the other pipe from germany and let it sit there to retirement

If I go down this road with this pipe, I'll get the secondary cats reinstalled but only after getting them totally emptied. That way I'll keep the nice sound of the full monty but keeping things as OE looking and discreet as possible
