Great job!
Good job on the post and taking the time to take photos of the work - it keeps us all out of the $tealer$hip

Yup it still works.... I pulled mine back out and replaced the bulb, since I did the fix I have driven over some rough roads and everything still works great. I suggest you try this if your LCD isn't working correctly, mine was pretty bad and I was skeptical if what I was doing was even going to work but it did and I am HAPPY with the results. The whole thing took me less than 30 minutes and most of the time spent was figuring out how to take it apart and how everything worked. I could do it in less than 15 minutes now that I have done it before. The pics I took should make it pretty easy for anyone trying this out. GOOD LUCK

No gluing or greasing needed?
Did you have to reinforce any of the connectors to give better electric conection to the display that fades out?
You are Macgyver, yes?

you just unplugged the flatwire from circuit board, took most of the parts apart, then just put them all together?

I envy 503C43 ////AMG how he can fix his car on his own.
How I wish I could do the same on my car. I have the fear of taking things apart and not being able to put them back together again.

Don't be fooled, I am scared to death as I do it The scariest for me yet was the gear display in the shifter and the shift linkage. Once you get everything apart there is a lot to go back together. The trick is I take a photo before I move to the next step.... A picture is worth a thousand words + it helps for my detailed write ups

We should be very happy knowing you and your superexpertise knowledge on this forum!
I haven't reached the high mileage on my car yet, the mileage when the car begins to break down!
I pray to god I'm good to go for another few years without any major repair expenses.

2000 CLK430 Convertible
Great write-up on your the repair.
My CLK430 has developed the same fault. The climate control module is dual zone though, do you think the repair will work for me too?
Cheers

My 2001 R129 model SL also has the same unit. My thanks also for the info here, I had a go today.
However, I thought I should add here that the little screws that hold the circuit board on are actually smaller than mentioned above. It says they are an SD10, I think they are only one size down from that but two sets of them I had only went as small as a 10 which was pretty frustrating having split the unit (not intended as a dig at the otherwise great info).
So make sure you have very very smal torx style bits to hand!
I got someone to help so fingers x'd my unit keeps working. Couldn't believe the price of a new one, I priced it this week- £550/$600+!!

this is a common problem for w202 cars, and an expensive part to replace

Jason,
Mine has started to do the disappearing act also. I gently tap the side of the control unit and the numbers reappear (for the moment). Do you think the unit is going out?
