Awful "scraping" sound when locking the car...

...is coming directly behind the fuel-filler door...WTF?!?!

Ever since I bought the car it's made this metal-on-metal "scraping" sound when locking the car with the remote. Anyone have an idea what the hell this is?

Even better, how do I fix it?!?!

A bit of lubrication on and around the plunger may help

Check the lid - it may be slightly bent in or out and causing your problem...

open the little fuel door and then lock the car, you will see a small air pump push out a metal rod. The rod is used to lock your fuel door so someone couldn't dump sugar in your tank.

I'm sure you are missing either the lubrication or gasket of some sort.

Just a quick update, this^^ was the cause of my problem. I tried some graphite lube at first, which didn't do isht. So I applied some spray-on lithium grease and it worked like a champ!

Good thread. I have the same problem. I knew it was the gas lid, but was too lazy to lube. Will do that tonight when I get home.

Glad I found this post. I knew where the sound was coming from.. just not sure if it was safe to lube that plunger. I will lube it now.
Walking away and hitting the lock on remote, the car sounded like it was breaking wind.
