1998 C43 AMG steering wheel wobble

I have the most annoying issue.

At 60-70mph the steering wheel wobbles back and forth. After or below those speeds it drives perfect.

I have had the wheels balanced twice by different shops and had the alignment done twice now with no change in the vibration.

Ive had this problem on a volkswagen before and spent $1500 trying to correct it through tires and new wheels to alignments and balancing new control arms everything to not solve the issue. So I had to get rid of the car.

Im hoping I don't have to get rid of this one as well.

It really makes the car dreadful to drive. Which is not at all how you should feel driving a Mercedes.

Any advice would be helpful thanks!

Get the car on a lift and check all the suspension components for cracks or leaks. There are multiple parts that could cause this issue, so its best to have a look at it before you start throwing money at it.

Have you checked your steering box? They can gain some play in them over time, and need adjusting. There is an adjustment on them, but it typically involves removing the intake manifold on the 202.

I just had it on the lift today. Replaced the steering damper. Checked all the arms everything looked and felt solid no rips in boots or anything. Still no change

So when I purchased the car the alignment was way off. I had the alignment fixed and the problem started. Only thing I can think of would be the tires were worn a certain way and when the alignment was corrected they are grabbing random parts of the road.

That's weird.
The tires could definitely be part of the problem. Sound like this will probably be your first step in the elimination process since everything else looks good.

I also noticed that you didn't mention the idler arm bushing, make sure you check that too. Than could be a major cause of at speed vibrations.

The bushing itself is relatively cheap. I will take a look. Is a press needed to install new bushing?

Nope, All you need is a floor jack, 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, an allen socket (forgot what size), and about 5-10 minutes of your time.

Have been having same issue for a while. Will be changing idler arm bushing and steering damper tomorrow. Also planning to put on adjustable rear camber arms which should get the rear end alignment into spec, hopefully helping the wobble
