So I placed an order for some AFE filters last week, but received a call from FCP this morning that they were not in stock. I cancelled the order and now it has me contemplating what I should do.

At nearly twice the price of Green filters, are the AFEs twice as good?
Zayed says the 55K airbox is a great setup and truly recommends it. Supposedly it only requires slight modification. But the downside is that you lose the engine cover.
Now, I may be completely wrong, but IIRC, Jeff (speedybenz) ran a setup by removing the fog lights and pushing air through those passageways. Does anyone have more info on this? Was this a quad setup? Were the two fog inlets merged into the uppers?

I didn't remove fog lights, why remove them unless we can customize air tubes, there are many aftermarket options of length & ID tubes,,


*As i remember; i kept L/R scoops in there place, cut tubes from the End of scoops, then joint 3" tubes from scoops to 55K airbox...

I remember reading Jeff's foglight intake tube post, YEARS AGO, but I also recall him making it very clear it was a temporary fix due to how low the foglights are. Just begging for excess water and debris to make it into your airbox and/or engine.

He recently sold his bad-*** C43, with his intake setup dramatically different. He hand-made plastic intake velocity stacks inside his intake. He said it was the only intake mod that ever made a big difference on the M113, but it made his intake unreliable and prone to vac leaks (because it's nearly impossible to reseal correctly)

The stock airbox is pretty decent. You could remove all baffling from the stock airbox, I did this before getting a renntech box. There is quite a bit of material you can remove and a lot of sharp corners to be rounded.
I would not bother with 55k boxes or pulling air from foglights.

You could buy the afe filters from somewhere else.

Whatever you do, do not use an oiled filter. I believe these green ones you are referring to are oiled. Oiled filters belong nowhere near a car with a mass airflow sensor, seen it cause problems many, many times. It's not if, but when it will contaminate the maf.
If you still don't believe me I have a set of k&n filters I will sell you for the stock box.

Sounds like AFE + removed baffles is the path I'll take. Appreciate all the info guys.

I use k&n filters but I never oiled them. Do you know if they come preoiled?

Oily filters = slowly dead MAF,

and removing airbox & MAF mesh's is great idea..

The ones I have got in past were pre oiled.

By not oiling a gauze filter, you might help your maf but you are hurting your cylinder walls. These filters rely on the oil to catch the dirt, much less filter material so its compensated by oiling to catch some (still does not filter as well as a paper filter). If you're going to run a non oiled k&n type filter, you may as well be running no filter. You currently have very little filtration.

Hmm i might swap my stock ones back in. Still have them and they are fine.

Pretty sure I need a new MAF sensor anyway at this point

i tried them before, they are great, atmosphere/weather could make their age longer or shorter..!!

K&N Ruined 2 MAFs in my Audi's, but I also had
K&Ns in my W211 and never caused a problem
for 2.5 years, also never cleaned them and YES
All K&Ns come pre-oiled.

AFE For everything since then.

When removing the baffles, are we talking about the top or bottom of the airbox? Here's the top & the bottom.

Yeah, 2 baffles there, one in the MAF, and the other one in the airbox attached directly to the MAF..

Got a question.

I took apart my airbox and cleaned it and I also put my stock filters back in.

I noticed that two of the screws that connect the bottom and the top of the airbox are stripped. Will this be an issue? Is there loss of airflow or air compression? I cant really see the box separating but the screws wont tighten all the way...

If you have air pump, push little air inside and see if there are any leak in those screws area,,

during age & open/close, screw ports will get expanded, cause as i remember; it's plastic ports isn't..??
