1998 c43 with High Mileage

Hello, anybody has any advice if I should buy 1998 c43 with 230000 miles on it. Or it is already too much and not worth to buy

Thanks

I bought one with 238,000 miles and it now has 292,000, no real problems still a great car.

I bought another with 200k miles and it's been mostly great so far too. I've had to replace the water pump, idler pulley, and alternator on both cars. One car has had issues because my wife crashed it. The other one had a strange leak causing the interior to get wet. Otherwise, both cars were good.

It all depends on the price and what you know about the car. If it's got aftermarket rims on it and has been through 5 owners, it's a big risk. If it's been through 1 or 2 owners and neither of which was a punk teenager then it's probably ok.

Run the VIN through carfax.

C43's are very well built and are holding up really well in their age.

If the vehicle has proof of regular maintenance, drives well, brakes straight and doesn't feel like anything is wrong with it, then I would go ahead. High mileage is not a problem with the 43. Poor or lack of maintenance is. Like Sulaco says if it has 2-3 owners and no punk teenager, that is also a sign that it has been well loved.

Agree, apart some rust issues except for those living in dry climates

I've often wondered about this, because as far as I can tell the US C43's don't have many rust issues. My 1998 lived in Michigan from 1998 until about 3 years ago(extreme winters, lots of wet and salty roads 6 months a year), and it has almost no rust! My 1999 lived in Florida from 1999 until 2011 with 238k miles and it has ZERO rust (Florida is absurdly hot and wet year round).

Was there a difference in the paint they used between continents?

Ask if you can take off the side moldings on the doors. One screw on the inside of each door is all you need to remove them. Once the screw is off you just slide the molding towards the rear of the car. If there is no rust buy the car. If there is rust you will need to remove every bit of it and it will hold for a long time. I bought a 98 c43 and under these moldings there were a lot of rust. Although it looked REAL bad it was only surface rust. If you don't know how to do body and paint and there is rust there than you have a problem since it will cost you to have that fixed. You can use the rust to negotiate the price....

Good point!
It should look like this minus the mess.

Thanks! AFAIK it's all original. I touched up a small spot that the moulding had rubbed over time just to prevent any future issues.
