Transmission wont shift... Ideas?!

This morning i drove to work just fine in my 1997 W202 C36 AMG. Now coming home is where the problem lays. It didnt want to shift out of first (2nd?) gear and the check engine light didnt come on once. Once getting home and parking, the transmission made a thud sound in reverse drive and a quieter one in park.

In the past week or two I have noticed it didnt want to shift every now and then, but nothing a light engine rev didnt fix. Also the check engine light would come on for maaaaybe 2 minutes max and turn right back off while the car was driving just fine at all speeds....

Any ideas what i should have the shop do? Obviously I dont want them chasing some goose around my engine and transmission bays running up my bill.

Most likely the speed sensor on the conductor plate is cracked throws the transmission into limp mode.
Pull the codes first, you should see something related to vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

I had this happening on several vehicles.

This would be the plate i'm talking about:

Conductor plates ar quite common. also sound like your trans oil pump is going out, listen for any whirring/whining noises heard in conjunction with acceleration coming from the bell housing area, this would indicate a failing oil pump.

yes, very most likely conductor plate. not a total transmission rebuild, so don't fret. if you're a reasonably capable DIY you can do this entire fix yourself for 200+USD
