Star Clone

Too bad this doesn't work in our cars...

ebay

I emailed him to make sure it is not listed by mistake, nothing back yet.

Has anyone bought a star clone? What are the issues, I know sometimes maybe you have to register software so I am a little worried about that. I ordered the WIS from ebay, but never installed it so no idea if it works, maybe I will give it a try and see. This looks interesting Dell D630

Here is what I have learned, the Icarsoft i980 just doesn't work with w202 or with w210. It's a real shame because it seems to do a lot at a good price point.

The MB SD Connect Clone comes from China and it is hit or miss. Most of them will read codes, but they will not write to your car, some of them will both read and write so it's important to know someone who bought one that actually works so you can reference the seller. A Star Clone will run you no less than $500 so its a good idea to make sure you're getting your moneys worth.

Another option is Carsoft (not the same as Icarsoft), and this seems like a really good option. You can buy (what I assume is a knock off Carsoft 7.4 for $70), but the knock off has limitations and install problems, however if you get passed that then you end up with a very decent tool. There is Carsoft v 12, which is supposed to be a big jump and a really useful diagnostic scanner that doesn't suffer from the install issues and has additional features over 7.4.

I really need to do more research on the Carsoft product, but I am leaning this way right now.

Can anyone add to this?

I purchased a Carsoft MB Ultimate Home V12 which comes in one CD. It comes from Belgium. You need a multiplexer and some cables, specially the fancy round multi-pin plug. Unfortunately I never got it to work correctly and was never really bothered to look into more detail. Guess I'm lazy...

For my diagnosis, I use a smartphone app called "Torque Pro". This works perfectly for the reading of fault codes and it even clears them too. You just need the multi-pin plug with a transmission dongle at the other end, as the data is transmitted by wifi from the engine bay to your smartphone in the cockpit. It monitors plenty of stuff too.

Thanks for the info, looks like a decent way to grab codes. Does it also read the other codes aside from engine? I mean like climate, srs, abs etc?

Oups, transmission is not by Wi-Fi but Bluetooth... 😊
