Engine ticking sound?
Hey Guys,
I own a '95 C36 w/ 143k miles. The car is simply amazing and always puts a smile on my face. A true testament to the build quality of the older gen MBs! I rarely drive it. I've owned the car for 8-9 yrs and cannot bring myself to sell it.
To the point, I noticed a ticking sound develop around 110k. The performance has remained the same. The car was in for a recent emissions inspection and they asked me about it. One of the techs there recommended running thicker oil through it. Based off my research on our model I would assume the lifters would be the culprit part.
I'm interested to hear your thoughts and if any of you found a resolution. In all honestly it does not bother me. The car has always been maintained. I feel the sound appears to be a bit louder when it's hot or humid out there. Any feedback would be appreciated!

could be MOT yes but m104 engines have timing chains and are not adjustable
could be lifter, yes, which is harmless and normal on m104's. the m104 was a fantastic, durable engine but they get a bit noisy later in life. if you're using proper oil and doing proper intervals, it's nothing to be concerned with. the chains last basically forever and at 104k miles your engine is actually low miles for one of them. great, great motors!
