Willow Springs "Big Track" track day - 2/5/2011

Found this while looking for track events near SoCal. Has anyone been to this track? I would love to hear your opinions.

I am thinking about signing up. Anyone else interested?

----------------------------
Our next event will be held on the "big track" at Willow Springs Raceway. This 2.5 mile road course has 9 turns and elevation changes. This is the fastest track in the area that offers a great track going experience. If you’re looking for that high-speed experience, this is the track for you! We will have plenty of instruction for beginners, and AMB lap timing available.

$140 for the full day event
$20 for AMB lap timing
$30 for Driving School and one on one instruction
$10 for Helmet Rental

This event is a self-tech event. It is your responsibility to make sure your car is safe for the race track

Never heard of that group but I've prob been 'round the big track a thousand times...it's a very fast track although not very technical (like Streets of Willow). Not a track where you want to drop a wheel or have an "off" though...it's very easy to destroy a street car in an instant.

That is scary, especially since I don't have any track experience! I wonder if it will be too crowded if all 100 slots are taken.

100 slots ?? That's prob at least 3 run groups and maybe even 4. I'd pass as there will be lots of traffic and waiting around. And you shouldn't be worried about going out on track...as long as you just drive within your ability and use your mirrors !!

If you've never done a track event, NASA is a good group to start out with. They are extremely safe and you get good instruction. Here is they're socal schedule http://socal.drivenasa.com/2010/11/2...-schedule.html

Redline Time Attack were the organizers of the Sebring event in August that Keith and I along with several friends participated in. Very well done and lots of track time! Very well officiated as Keith can attest to when he and Ron(Lambo SL) pulled a double pass on a race prepped M3 and got black flagged!

Also - Speedventures is a good start, you can choose the "beginner" group so everyone has the same basic skill set as you. Also they do events all over California so if Fontana is closer to you, you can wait for that track.

The big track at Willow is a lot of fun. Pretty easy to learn and not technical, so even on your first time you'll have fun. There are 2 turns that you have to be careful of. The blind right hander over the crest and the flat out 120 mph turn 8. Like LZH already said, you don't want to have an excursion into the botanical gardens on that track. Lots of unhealthy stuff beyond the asphalt.

Looks like I'll be there at the end of January with Evosport.

Nick - Off topic, but I was at Laguna Seca about a year and a half ago with the R32 owners club and saw a gray C63 there - by chance was that you? Ever there when there was a boatload of VW's ?

Wasn't me. I've only run my C63 one time at Laguna Seca with Trackmasters in October. Sounds fun though

Just checked it out...their event costs $395 vs $125 for the extremespeed event. That does include free breakfast, lunch, instruction and helmet rental...but still, wonder if it's worth the extra $270, unless they have much fewer cars (extremespeed event has 85 slots).

None fast enough!
yes, much fewer cars (less than 25), endless track time and the best professional instruction. You cannot compare days.

thanks

Absolutely an incredible deal for that type of an event. Look what the AMG Academy runs for a day and no where near the track time.

Except you do get to drive AMG Academy cars and a variety of them. How much is that worth!?! Limited to 12 participants as well with excellent instruction. Again not really comparable to other offerings.

I do agree though Evosports track day does sound like an excellent deal!

I had ran with them last year at SOW. They were nice and well-organized. I just signed up this event.
