Anybody's Brake Calipers Chipped? How does it happen?
I noticed a nice chip in my front caliper today after washing the wheel. How does this happen with low miles and no tracking? Anyone know if its covered under warranty?
TIA

mine are, probably from exchanging wheels on and off...some are on the face too so maybe from cleaning with brushes (plastic handle part)
massive caliper + heavy 18/19" wheel with little inner clearance = bang

I once had a stone stuck between the shield and rotor on my ML (made screeching noise)while driving on the street so a chip can happen. Your stone probably entered on the inner side and while the spokes are spinning, it must have knocked it onto the caliper.

I have a huge chip on my RF caliper. I assume it was a rock. No warranty will cover it.
Rocks get in there all the time - that is why you don't see street calipers on the bottom of the wheel hub (like on an F1 car). If the caliper was at the bottom, rocks and debris would not fall out. Lewis Hamilton crashed hard several years ago after a rock got caught between his caliper and wheel -- the rock machined a hole into the wheel until it suddenly lost pressure.

Is there a paint code for these or something? I may repaint them or powdercoat them. Should I chip some paint off off and get the color analyzed at home depot (joke)

Driving mostly 2 lane black top roads. The clearance between the top surface of the caliper and the inside opposite wheel surface is low. I have scratches where ( I believe) gravel is caught and "rolled" until small enough to fall out. Bummer
