"Key not detected"
I get this message from time to time. I always have my key in my right pocket & sometimes when i get in my car & press the start button i get this message on the display. I also have problems unlocking the car sometimes. It seems that if i have the key out, it all works perfectly. I can't believe that having the key in my pocket causes this issue. Is this a sensor issue or is clothing that much of a barrier?
Anyone else experience this?

I also always leave mine in my right pocket and sometimes with my cell phone and have never had any problem. Maybe try changing battery? I had to change mine within the first month for some reason but all good ever since!

I get that message whenever my key is in the same pocket as my company ID card. I think it's the magnetic strip in my card. I've also gotten that message with my phone in the same pocket as well.

Do you have a metal plate in your nut sack? J/K Usually a new battery needed in key believe it or not. The keys are made a long time before the cars and the batteries die out, but should last a long time.

It's likely a dead battery in the key. I've had this problem in my cayenne and my merc, don't leave the batter out of the key too long, or all **** breaks loose... well it did in my porsche anyways.
Long short, try and replace the battery.

+1 Had similar issues before I changed the battery. BTW its a 30 second thing, don't go to the dealer. For 8$ incl shipping I got 10 energizer batteries, good for a couple of years.

It could be that the batteries are getting weak. I would definitely start by changing the batteries. Troubleshoot the obvious first.

I had originally assumed the batteries as the cause, but the thing is that the remote works fine when i open/close the locks with the buttons on the key-even from far. It's solely the keyless-go features that sometimes have issues.
That being said, i will still change the batteries today. Thanks guys.

There are two separate radios involved in the keyless systems. A long range transmitter for when you hit buttons, and a short range transmitter for when the vehicle is in range of the sensors on the car. When you hit the button, your forcing a reaction and transmitting the signal, when your using keyless, it (and the car) transmit a small amount of data every few seconds, a low battery will cause the keyfob to stop transmitting, or transmit with longer intervals in between, resulting in your car not recognizing the key.
It works that way with the Toyota and infiniti ones (I had a Toyota that had it in the car I traded in for my C63, and my wife currently has it in her FX35), I am guessing it works the same way in most cars that use keyless systems.

You can test battery by performing test as outlined in your owners manual:
1. Press lock or unlock button on fob.
2. Battery check lamp on fob will light briefly.
3. If light does not come on, replace battery.

Joe

The only way to know is to put the car on STAR and go to Keys, you place both keys in the car and then program, it takes about 5 mins, that way you will know that both key are programmed.

where do you keep your wallet? Is it an rfi blocker wallet to keep someone from stealing your credit card info - this will prevent it from working properly. There is also a static electricity problem which temporarily disabled the key until it is grounded/buttons manually operated. Getting a leather key pouch cover can help with that. The only other possibility other than battery is going to be your key is taking a crap. There is no programming for keyless go keys. The older models only allowed 2 keytracks of the 8 to be enabled for keyless go but it isn't that way anymore.
