External appearance of factory LSD
Hello all. Quick question if I may. From the outside - ie if you get under the rear of the car and have a look - do the factory LSDs look different to the standard diff? Do they have different casing/cooling fins etc, or are the differences all internal? Not terribly important, sort of related to another post on here at the moment about visual differences with the Development Package cars.

my 2011 doesn't either.
I believe this is an add on someone was selling, but it is not included from AMG factory spec'ed LSDs.

I like it though with the exception of it hanging low. I may have to make something like that on my CNC mill but I'd curve the fins to help prevent it from getting ripped off if something were to strike it. I just had my LSD serviced at the dealer this past weekend and I was under my car in the service area checking things out. I didn't remember that heatsink so I just went and crawled under my car only to be sad when I didn't see something like in the picture above.

Well, Im looking at my VIN option list and there it is....P471 LSD $2,030.00 option and mine is a 2011. I just came from looking under my car and there are no heat fins on my differential?
So....no fins is not a guarantee that it is a non LSD rear end.
And Ruthless....what kind of rear refuser is that?

My recommendation is to get the VIN from a vehicle you're interested and call a local Mercedes dealer and speak with an Assistant Service Manager. Ask them to run a report on the VIN and see if it has the LSD because you're looking at buying a Mercedes. If they don't want to help, let them know you'll bring your business their way for service/maintenance. That's what I did with my Service Manager, and they have treated me great. My dealer gave me the full history report which they normally don't share with customers. It shows maintenance, past warranty repairs, past service repairs/damage, replacement items, down to when loaner vehicles were provided. It also shows every option the car was built with, including the original build date and the selling dealer. Your other option is to call as if you own the car and ask if you need to get your differential serviced. Explain you don't know if it has an LSD and they can look it up. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
For example after I bought my car I found out the previous owner hit a curb requiring a wheel repair, along with new camber bolts plus an alignment. My selling dealer didn't disclose that to me even when I specifically asked about any past damage/warranty repairs.

Google's good
It appears us guys in the US don't get this cooler for our 2100 clams!
Glad I confirmed it because I looked under my car too and almost flipped--no fins and I paid for that damn LSD

On the other hand, this makes me feel a little better about being impatient and skipping the finned covers with my install.

This thread is interesting. I have seen a couple of C63's with factory LSDs, and they both had the finned covers (there are two part #'s, the finned back cover, plus the finned heat sink that bolts to the bottom). I wanted to add these to my car when I had my aftermarket LSD installed, but they were not available and there was no estimate of when they would become available, so I skipped them. I wonder if the factory has had supply issues and just installs the finned covers if they have them laying around? That does not sound like the Germans, but this apparently random approach to the factory diff cover seems very odd.
